  Cano signed a contract with the Diablos Rojos del Mexico of the Mexican Baseball League on Friday. Cano is now 41 but isn't ready to retire just yet. The 17-year major-league veteran last saw action in the big leagues in 2022, when he played in 33 games for three different teams.

Cano might not see much action for the stacked D.R. squad, but he could potentially do some late-game pinch hitting against righties. The 40-year-old played in 33 games for three different teams in 2022, managing just a .373 OPS. Cano is a free agent but hasn't given any indication that he's ready for retirement.

  Cano elected free agency after being outrighted by Atlanta on Thursday. The 39-year-old was designated for assignment earlier this week, and it's hardly a surprise he'll be returning to the open market. Cano appeared in only nine games during his brief stint in Atlanta and went 4-for-26 with a double, a walk and a run. The veteran has a .373 OPS across 33 games in his three big-league stops this year, so he seems unlikely to receive a look from another team.

  Atlanta designated Cano for assignment Monday. Cano recently lost hold of his role as Atlanta's primary second baseman, and his status as a left-handed hitter with limited defensive utility made him an ill fit in a bench role. As a result, Atlanta opted to replace him with Ehire Adrianza, who was acquired from the Nationals on Monday and is a more traditional fit for a utility role. Given that he's now been let go by three teams this season after slashing a collective .150/.183/.190 with a career-worst 24 percent strikeout rate over 104 plate appearances in the majors, the 39-year-old Cano's prolific run in the big leagues could be over.

• Braves' Robinson Cano: Remains on bench

  Cano is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. The 39-year-old has started only three of eight games coming out of the All-Star break, and he's on the bench again Sunday despite Arizona sending out righty Merrill Kelly. Cano has a .154/.185/.192 slash line through nine games for Atlanta. Orlando Arcia will receive another start at the keystone and appears to be the favorite for starts going forward.
