    Jonathan Herrera elected free agency, according to MLB.com.Herrera was on the Cubs' active roster for the entire 2015 regular season, though he didn't receive a plate appearance over the last three weeks. The versatile infielder will look to catch on with another team, most likely on a minor league contract.

    Chicago Cubs infielder Jonathan Herrera launched his first home run of the season in the 6-1 win over the Mets on Thursday. Herrera's two-run home run in the sixth inning off Jacob deGrom gave the Cubs a 4-1 lead at the time. This was Herrera's first longball in nearly two years. His last home run prior to Thursday came on July 7, 2013. Herrera was getting a spot start at third base on Thursday, allowing Kris Bryant to have the afternoon off.

With Russell at shortstop, manager Joe Maddon moved Jonathan Herrera to second base. He will bat seventh, while Russell will bat last. Russell is hitting just .158 (3 for 19) with an RBI over his last six games.

He will bat ninth, with starting pitcher Jason Hammel hitting eighth.  Herrera is slashing .220/.238/.268 for the season.  The rest of the Cubs' lineup is the same from Saturday.

Olt is dealing with a wrist injury and is hitting just .154 on 13 at-bats to start the year. Jonathan Herrera will again take his place at third and bat ninth in the order.

    Cubs 3B Olt (wrist) out of lineup, Herrera gets start

    Chicago Cubs third baseman Mike Olt will not start Sunday, one day after getting hit by a pitch on his wrist that required X-rays, according to MLB.com, with Jonathan Herrera getting the nod at third base.  The X-rays on Olt were negative, but Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Saturday that if the wrist remained sore, Olt might not play. Herrera made the Cubs roster with a strong spring training after signing with the team as a free agent in the offseason. He hit .233 in 90 at-bats with Boston last year and has one at-bat in two games this year.  Olt said that he woke up without any swelling in the wrist and felt good after taking some batting practice swings, noting that he could come off the bench if need be.

    Jonathan Herrera, Matt Szczur make Cubs Opening Day roster

    The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of infielder Jonathan Herrera Sunday, awarding him a spot on the team's Opening Day roster. Matt Szczur has also made the team as a reserve outfielder. Herrera hit .293/.341/.317 in 41 spring at-bats to earn a roster spot. Szczur hit .354/.426/.792 with five home runs, nine RBI and three stolen bases in 48 spring at-bats. Outfielder Ryan Sweeney was designated for assignment Sunday to clear a 40-man roster spot for Herrera.
