Guardians' Carlos Carrasco: Outrighted to Columbus

Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers Friday and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus. After being dropped from Cleveland's 40-man roster Tuesday, Carrasco could have elected for free agency. Instead, the 37-year-old righty will stick with the organization he's spent 12 seasons with and finish the year in Triple-A. His demotion to Columbus acts somewhat as a promotion, as he most recently pitched for Double-A Akron while working his way back from a hip strain.

Guardians' Carlos Carrasco: Removed from 40-man roster

The Cleveland Guardians designated Carlos Carrasco (hip) for assignment Tuesday.Carrasco looks to be healthy again after making a three-inning rehab start for Double-A Akron on Friday, but the Guardians don't have a spot for him in the big leagues. Before landing on the shelf Aug. 9 with a left hip strain, Carrasco struggled to a 5.64 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 103.2 innings over 21 starts for Cleveland. Assuming Carrasco clears waivers, he'll likely decline an outright assignment to the minors and will become a free agent. Carrasco is set to turn 38 yards old in March and may have thrown his last pitch in the big leagues.

Guardians' Carlos Carrasco: Makes rehab start Friday

Carlos Carrasco (hip) began a rehab assignment Friday with Double-A Akron, covering three innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs on three hits and no walks.Carrasco tossed 41 pitches (27 strikes) in the outing, his first since he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 9 with a left hip strain. Though the Cleveland Guardians wouldn't seem to have an opening in the rotation for Carrasco with rookie Joey Cantillo thriving of late as the club's new No. 5 starter in place of the injured Alex Cobb (finger), Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt told MLB.com on Sept. 3 that he still envisions Carrasco returning from the IL as an option to start. Carrasco is still expected to require at least one more rehab start in the minors before the Guardians activate him and make a decision on his role.

Guardians' Carlos Carrasco: Closing in on live session

Cleveland Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Sunday that Carlos Carrasco (hip) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session by the middle of the week, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Until Antonetti spoke to the media Sunday, the club hadn't provided many updates on Carrasco's status since he landed on the injured list Aug. 9 with a left hip strain. Based on Antonetti's comments, Carrasco was able to resume throwing within the past week, and the 37-year-old right-hander will continue the ramp-up process when he faces hitters in the coming days. Alex Cobb (fingernail) is also scheduled for a live session later this week and appears on pace to beat Carrasco back from the IL, so the Guardians may not have room in the rotation for the latter pitcher once he's fully stretched out. Carrasco had posted a 5.64 ERA over 103.2 innings over his 21 starts this season prior to being shelved with the hip injury.

Guardians' Carlos Carrasco: Early exit in Philly

Carlos Carrasco (3-9) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings as the Cleveland Guardians fell 8-0 to the Phillies. He struck out five. The veteran right-hander put up goose eggs for three innings before the wheels came off in the fourth, beginning with a two-run homer by Bryce Harper. It was Carrasco's shortest outing since April 6, and he had given Cleveland at least five innings in seven straight starts coming into Saturday, although with less-than-stellar results. On the season, he sports a 5.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 79:27 K:BB through 95 innings. With the trade deadline looming, prospect Joey Cantillo getting a look Sunday and Matthew Boyd (elbow) getting stretched out in the minors, Carrasco's time in the rotation could be drawing to a close, but for now he's scheduled to make his next start at home next weekend against the Orioles.
