Ryan M. Kalish announced his retirement Friday after appearing in one game for the New Britain Bees of the independent Atlantic League, Peter Gammons of The Athletic reports. The 30-year-old Kalish knew heading into the season that his chronic knee problems wouldn't allow him to continue his career, but he wanted to get one final at-bat in the professional ranks before retiring. Kalish appeared in parts of four seasons in the majors with the Red Sox and Cubs, with his most recent big-league action coming in 2016. He slashed .245/.297/.349 across 422 career plate appearances while mostly serving as a reserve outfielder.

Cubs' Ryan Kalish: Clears waivers, headed to Triple-A Iowa
Ryan Kalish cleared waivers Sunday and was sent to Triple-A Iowa, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Kalish was designated for assignment Friday, and it appears he didn't draw the fancy of any other clubs. He would likely be one of the top candidates to rejoin the Chicago Cubs should another injury occur in the outfield, but for now he'll concentrate on doing all he can to keep his name atop the list by performing in the minors.

Cubs' Ryan Kalish: DFA'd by Cubs on Saturday
Ryan Kalish was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.Kalish was added to the 40-man roster and called up from Triple-A Iowa on May 3, but he'll now be subject to waivers, as the Cubs needed to free up a roster spot for Miguel Montero, who came off the DL on Saturday. Cubs' Ryan Kalish: Called up to majors Tuesday
Ryan Kalish was added to the 40-man roster and called up to the majors Tuesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. With Matt Szczur headed to the disabled list, a spot opened up on the Chicago Cubs roster, and they needed another outfielder to fill the role. Kalish is raking with Triple-A Iowa, holding a .368/.471/.509 batting average, but he hasn't appeared in the majors since 2014 and only has a .245 batting average in his big league career. Between this and limited playing time, it could be tough for Kalish to get much going at the plate in Chicago. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, Christian Villanueva was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Cubs' Ryan Kalish: Set to be called up
Ryan Kalish may be called up from Triple-A Iowa if Matt Szczur (hamstring) is placed on the disabled list, CSN Chicago's Patrick Mooney reports.Szczur had an MRI on Tuesday, and Kalish's agent sent out a tweet that strongly suggests the transaction will occur. After sitting out of professional baseball last season, the 28-year-old Kalish appears poised to play in the majors for the first time since 2014. He never had much luck against big-league pitching in his previous stints, but he does own a .368/.471/.509 slash line for Triple-A Iowa through 70 plate appearances this season. With Jason Heyward (wrist) merely day-to-day, Kalish doesn't figure to get more than two or three starters per week.

Cubs' Ryan Kalish: Signs minor-league deal with Cubs
Ryan Kalish signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Kalish sat out of baseball last season after his minor league contract with the Jays was voided prior to spring training, but at 27 years old, he's still far from washed up. The outfielder was able to parlay a minor league deal with the Cubs into a roster spot out of spring training in 2014, and he'll look to do the same again this time around. However, a season away from the game and the Cubs' incredible depth in the outfield figures to make it quite difficult for Kalish to seriously contend for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
