Anthony Varvaro: Will retire from pro baseball

Anthony Varvaro officially retired from professional baseball Monday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports. The 31-year-old was clicking along with a 2.83 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 28.2 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket, but since he wasn't on the Red Sox's 40-man roster, a promotion wasn't forthcoming. Rather than slumming it in the minors or asking for a release, Varvaro has apparently decided to hang up his spikes. The right-hander has appeared in six big-league seasons as a member of three teams, producing a combined 3.23 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 183.2 innings.
