Second baseman Mark Ellis announces retirement
Long-time Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis has announced his retirement, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "It was definitely time," the 37-year-old Ellis said. "My kids are getting older and I kind of realized it was time to do something else." Ellis spent 12 years in the majors, nine of which came with the Athletics. He was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014, but was limited to just 73 games due to an oblique injury. Athletics general manager Billy Beane said Ellis was a "consummate professional" when he played, and has a job waiting for him if he ever wants to return to the game. "After some deserved time with Sarah and his children, I’m hopeful, when he is ready, Mark will continue his baseball career with the A’s," Beane said. Ellis compiled a career .262/.327/.384 over 5,117 at-bats.

Mark Ellis to be Cards' regular second baseman
With Kolten Wong's demotion to Triple-A Memphis, veteran Mark Ellis will be the St. Louis Cardinals' regular second baseman for now, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. El "That’s what he was signed for," general manager John Mozeliak said of Ellis, who will make $5.25 million this year. "To give us that production, so we’ll take advantage of it."The 36-year-old Ellis battled a knee injury in the spring but now feels ready for regular duty. He went 2 for 5 in Monday's loss to Milwaukee, raising his average to .160. "Coming over here, I knew what I was getting into," Ellis said. "It’s unfortunate for Kolten that it hasn’t worked out well so far, not that it’s going to kill his career, by any means."

Kolten Wong still ceding time to Mark Ellis
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Kolten Wong is back in the lineup Monday against the Mets, after sitting out the team's previous two games. Veteran Mark Ellis started in Wong's place, and manager Mike Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Monday Ellis' track record plays a part in why he keeps turning his way. "We have a known quantity in Mark Ellis," Matheny said. "When he's going right and we can fit him in there and the matchup looks good, it's an easy day to give to him. Kolten is one of those great expectations-type players. He's shown so much of what he can do. We have to take advantage of days when he doesn't look right so we don’t just beat him up." Wong has struggled to open the season, hitting just .237/.297/.288, though he has appeared in 17 of the team's 20 games so far.

He could be nearing a return from the disabled list, MLB.com reports. "I should be really close," Ellis said. "I should be any day now.
