Angels' Luis Garcia: Records first post-Estevez save
Luis Garcia earned a save against Oakland on Sunday, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said before the game Sunday that Garcia would step into the closer role after Carlos Estevez was traded to Philadelphia on Saturday, and the skipper held true to this word when he brought Garcia into the contest with Los Angeles up by two runs in the top of the ninth inning. The veteran reliever did his part to reward his manager's confidence, needing just nine pitches to set the side down in order. The save was Garcia's career-high fourth of the campaign, and he's added 12 holds along with a 3.71 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB over 43.2 frames overall.

Angels' Luis Garcia: Stepping in as closer
Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said Sunday that Luis Garcia will take over as the club's primary closer, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. The departure of Carlos Estevez leaves the Halos with a hole in the ninth inning, and Garcia will receive the first look as the team's new closer. Garcia has three saves and 12 holds with a 3.80 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB across 44 appearances this year. The veteran right-hander is also a candidate to be traded ahead of Tuesday's deadline given his expiring contact, in which case Ben Joyce would likely see most of those opportunities.

Angels' Luis Garcia: Nabs win in relief Monday
Luis Garcia (5-1) earned the win over Seattle on Monday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning in relief.All-Star Tyler Anderson gave the Los Angeles Angels 5.2 innings of one-run ball but received no offensive support while he was in the game. Garcia entered in the eighth with the game tied 1-1 and was effective despite throwing just 10 of 19 pitches for strikes, as he yielded only an infield single and fanned the final two batters he faced. The righty reliever then moved into position for the victory when Los Angeles scored twice in the top of the ninth. Garcia has been one of the team's top high-leverage options this season and has been very effective of late, posting a 1.32 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over his past 13.2 innings spanning 12 appearances. He's notched four wins and five holds over that span.

Angels' Luis Garcia: Notches third save
Luis Garcia struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Astros.Carlos Estevez had pitched both of the prior two days, giving up a run each time, so Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington turned to Garcia to wrap things up. The 37-year-old right-hander has never collected more than three saves in a season and his 5.06 ERA doesn't suggest he'll remain a reliable high-leverage option, but for now he seems to be the next man up when Estevez isn't available.

Angels' Luis Garcia: Grabs four-out save
Luis Garcia allowed two hits over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn a save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Rangers. He did not strike out or walk a batter.Garcia had allowed a run in each of his last three appearances entering Sunday. He flirted with danger, allowing a hit after relieving Jose Soriano in the eighth inning and another knock in the ninth, which he erased with a double play. Garcia likely got the save chance Sunday because regular closer Carlos Estevez pitched two innings in Saturday's 13-inning loss. Garcia has two saves and five holds to go with a 5.03 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB over 19.2 innings this season.

Angels' Luis Garcia: Nabs first save since 2022
Luis Garcia earned the save over the Marlins on Tuesday after allowing one run on one hit and a walk in the ninth inning. He struck out a batter as well.Garcia was called upon to protect a 3-0 lead in the ninth with usual closer Carlos Estevez presumably unavailable after pitching each of the last two days. Garcia served up a solo blast to Bryan De La Cruz but was able to close the door without any further harm. Garcia's now given up runs in both appearances though it appears he still has his manager's trust in late-game situations for now.
