The Philadelphia Phillies activated Dylan Covey (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list and outrighted him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, Tim Kelly of Phillies Nation reports.Covey has pitched well on his rehab assignment with Lehigh Valley, allowing just one run with a 9:3 K:BB over eight innings. However, the Phillies have elected to keep him there rather than add him to the major-league roster. Covey missed the first four months of the season with a shoulder strain.

Dylan Covey (shoulder) surrendered three earned runs on two hits and two walks while pitching one-third of an inning in his first rehab appearance Sunday for Single-A Clearwater.Making his first appearance at any level in 2024 after having been sidelined since spring training with a right shoulder strain, Covey unsurprisingly exhibited some rust. He allowed each of the first four runners he faced to reach base, though he was able to end his first rehab appearance on a high note by recording a strikeout. Covey tossed 20 pitches Sunday and won't need to get stretched out much further beyond that, but because he's been on the injured list all season, he'll likely to make several appearances in the minors and eventually move his assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being activated. He'll be ticketed for a low-leverage role out of the Philadelphia bullpen upon his reinstatement from the IL.

Dylan Covey (shoulder) was cleared to resume throwing bullpen sessions at extended spring training in Florida over the weekend, MLB.com reports.Covey was able to get back on the mound for the first time since making his final Grapefruit League appearance March 1 before being shut down with a right shoulder strain. As a reliever, Covey won't require as extensive of a buildup program as a starting pitcher would, but the right-hander is still likely at least a couple weeks away from being ready to return from the 15-day injured list.

Phillies' Dylan Covey: Takes loss in relief
Dylan Covey dropped to 1-2 after giving up two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks.With Matt Strahm working as the Philadelphia Phillies' opening pitcher on the night, Covey looked like a candidate to serve as a bulk reliever. However, manager Rob Thomson instead treated the series opener as more of a bullpen day, as five pitchers were used to cover eight innings. Since limiting this same Diamondbacks squad to one run over five innings in a starting role May 23, Covey has been used in relief in each of his last four appearances and hasn't covered more than two innings on any occasion. The Phillies are still running out a four-man rotation at the moment, but Covey doesn't look as though he'll be the clear-cut choice to pitch on days that a fifth starter is needed.
