Padres' Frank Garces: Takes starting role
Frank Garces has been moved to a starting role at Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. After struggling to keep his ERA below 4.00 while pitching from the bullpen for much of the season, Garces has seen his game improve since being used as a starter. He's had four starts since the change, three of which were respectable performances resulting in four runs across 16.2 innings. However, his most recent start on June 7 was a different story, as he gave up five earned runs in just four innings.

Padres' Frank Garces: Struggles in season debut
Frank Garces threw 2.1 innings of relief Thursday, allowing three hits, three earned runs and walking one, while striking out three in Triple-A El Paso's 8-0 loss to Reno.Garces is one of the few left-handed relievers in San Diego's system, but Thursday's performance doesn't bode well for his major league chances. Despite a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings during spring training, he didn't make the big league club, and if he continues to struggle in Triple-A, a call-up will become less likely.

Padres' Frank Garces: Receives invite to major league spring training
Frank Garces signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres that includes an invite to major league spring training.Garces spent the past two seasons with the Padres working as one of their few big league-ready left-handed relievers. He regressed to a 5.21 ERA last season and also posted a 1.658 WHIP while striking out only 30 batters against 22 walks over 38.0 innings. The fact that he's a left-handed reliever will help his odds of making the Opening Day roster, but he'll need to dial in his command and cut down on walks to earn a spot in the Padres' bullpen.

Frank Garces: Non-tendered by Padres
The Padres declined to tender Frank Garces a contract for 2016.He struggled to a 5.21 ERA and 1.68 WHIP last season while working primarily as a lefty specialist out of the San Diego bullpen. Walks were a major issue -- he issued 22 in 38 innings -- and he will need to rein it in to have any chance to break camp with a major-league team.
