Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Might not be lock for rotation
Andre Pallante could be competing for the final spot in the St. Louis Cardinals' rotation, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.Pallante entered camp as a favorite for a starting role, but with Michael McGreevy pitching well and the team leaning toward using Steven Matz in the rotation, it appears there's a chance Pallante could get squeezed out. That still seems highly unlikely, given that the 26-year-old was one of the team's best starters for a large chunk of last season. Pallante's velocity has been down, but the Cardinals don't seem concerned at this stage of the spring.

Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Three scoreless, but velo down
Andre Pallante permitted one hit and struck out a pair over three scoreless frames in Tuesday's Grapefruit League outing against the Mets. The bottom line was much improved from Pallante's first spring start when he allowed four runs and walked two in an inning of work. However, Pallante has yet to find the pep on his fastball this spring, with the velocity on his four-seamer down 1.7 mph from last year and the velocity on his sinker down 2.4 mph. It's not overly worrisome yet in early March, but it's something to keep an eye on.

Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Emerges victorious in arbitration
Andre Pallante will receive a $2.1 million salary for 2025 after winning his arbitration hearing against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. The Cardinals had filed for a $1.925 million salary for Pallante, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time. Pallante submitted a weak 9.0 K-BB% over 121.1 innings across his 29 appearances (20 starts) in 2024, but thanks to his ability to keep the ball on the ground and generate weak contact, most of his ERA estimators (4.15 SIERA, 3.89 xFIP, 3.46 xERA) were roughly in line with his actual ERA (3.78). He should have a firm grasp on a full-time rotation spot in 2025, though his poor strikeout rate will likely make him less valuable in fantasy leagues than in real life.
