Rangers' Jack Leiter: Earns first career win
Jack Leiter (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out four batters over five innings. After finishing last season with an 8.83 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 35.2 innings, Leiter turned in the best start of his young MLB career Friday. The only damage done against the 24-year-old righty came on an RBI single off the bat of Wilyer Abreu in the fourth inning, but Leiter immediately got out of the jam by inducing a double play in the next at-bat. It's too early to tell if his strong outing is a sign of what's to come this year or just an outlier, but he certainly has plenty of momentum heading into his start next week in Cincinnati.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Unfazed by batting practice mishap
Jack Leiter was hit in the top of the head by a flyball during a batting practice Thursday, but he remains on track to start Friday against the Red Sox, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports.Leiter was likely sent for testing after the mishap, but he quickly returned to the field and appears to be fine. The young right-hander earned a spot in the Texas Rangers' rotation after posting a 3.48 ERA and 21:10 K:BB over 20.2 innings during Cactus League play.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Earns rotation spot
Texas Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said Tuesday that Jack Leiter will open the season in the team's rotation, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.Leiter showed an increase in velocity this spring while striking out 21 over 20.2 innings. He also walked 10, and whether the 24-year-old is ultimately able to throw enough strikes will go a long way in determining how successful he'll be. The upside is certainly there, but there's also risk.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Grinds through four frames
Jack Leiter allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings in Sunday's spring start against the White Sox.Leiter gave up a lot of loud contact in the first inning, when the White Sox plated two runs, but he managed to grind out three scoreless innings after that. There were command issues, including the No. 9 batter with two outs after getting ahead of him -- but also enough for the right-hander to take away some positives following the game. "I think grinding through an outing like this, it wasn't the sharpest, but I made pitches when I had to," Leiter told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Much has changed for the pitcher since his previous start last Tuesday. Projected rotation members Cody Bradford (elbow) and Jon Gray (wrist) have been shut down and potentially face significant absences during the regular season. That puts Leiter and fellow Vanderbilt alum Kumar Rocker on paths to the rotation.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Competing to fill in for Bradford
Jack Leiter is competing with Kumar Rocker to fill the spot in the Texas Rangers' rotation vacated by Cody Bradford (elbow), Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.Manager Bruce Bochy announced Thursday that Bradford would begin the season on the injured list with a sore left elbow. While it seems there's hope that it won't be a long-term absence, his turn through the rotation will likely need to be filled at least a couple times. Leiter could be the favorite if the team goes mostly on spring training results, as he's allowed just three runs with a 13:6 K:BB over 10.2 innings. He was wild in his last outing, however, walking five over 2.2 frames while throwing more balls than strikes. Control has often been an issue for Leiter, but his stuff has ticked up this spring, and he has looked dominant at times.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Walks five Tuesday
Jack Leiter allowed one run on one hit and five walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Angels.Leiter was a late fill-in starter after Tyler Mahle was scratched due to forearm tightness. Perhaps the late change factored into the control issue exhibited by Leiter, who threw more balls (30) than strikes (29). Until this outing, Leiter was having an encouraging spring, handing out just one free pass over his first eight innings.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Continues strong spring
Jack Leiter allowed two hits, walked none and struck out three over three relief innings in Thursday's spring game against the Padres.Leiter continued an impressive Cactus League, during which he's allowed just two runs over eight innings. More impressively is that he's walked just one while striking out eight. Walks have been the bane of his professional career thus far. The right-hander threw all five of his pitches Thursday, including a new sinker and reworked changeup, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Optioned by Texas
The Texas Rangers optioned Jack Leiter to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.Leiter's first season in the majors is in the books following Friday's transaction. He appeared in nine games (six starts) for the Rangers this season, posting an 0-3 record with an 8.83 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 31:17 K:BB across 35.2 innings. Most of his time this year was spent in Triple-A, where over 18 outings (16 starts) he registered a 6-4 record with a 3.51 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 110:35 K:BB over 77 innings.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Shifts to bullpen
Jack Leiter appeared out of the bullpen in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners, taking a no-decision while striking out six batters and allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks over four innings. After starting in each of his prior six appearances with the Texas Rangers on the season, Leiter shifted to the bullpen Saturday while Max Scherzer (shoulder) made his return from the 15-day injured list. Since Scherzer wasn't fully stretched out after making just one rehab start prior to his activation, the Rangers ended up deploying him in tandem with Leiter, with both pitchers covering four innings and tossing 73 and 71 pitches, respectively. Scherzer and Jacob deGrom -- who returned from the IL on Friday -- should have longer leashes in their next outings this upcoming weekend versus Seattle, so Leiter may not be asked to piggyback either pitcher and may instead work in a more flexible relief role.

Rangers' Jack Leiter: Racks up 20 whiffs in no-decision
Jack Leiter allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday.Leiter had a rough first inning, serving up a leadoff homer to Taylor Ward and allowing an additional run in the frame. However, he bounced back from there, keeping Los Angeles scoreless while allowing just one hit over his remaining four innings. Leiter retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced and racked up an impressive 20 swinging strikes overall -- per Jared Sandler of 105.3 The FAN, that's the most whiffs ever in a single game by a Texas Rangers pitcher age 25 or younger. The rookie right-hander has yet to earn his first major-league win and owns a 10.41 ERA through six starts, but he's shown improvement over his last two outings.
