Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Returns from IL

Gunnar Hoglund (biceps) allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one over three innings in his 2023 debut May 29 after being activated from Single-A Stockton's 7-day injured list. The right-hander missed most of the first two months of the season while recovering from a biceps injury that dated back to last August. Though his results in his season debut left something to be desired, the Oakland Athletics are likely just happy to see the 23-year-old back on the mound again after the biceps injury and his recovery from Tommy John surgery have limited him to just three appearances as a professional since he was drafted in 2021.

Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Still dealing with biceps injury

Gunnar Hoglund's biceps issue from last season is still bothering him, so he opened the year on the 7-day injured list with Single-A Stockton, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports. He missed the end of last season with a biceps injury, and unfortunately Hoglund enters his age-23 season back on the shelf. The big 6-foot-4 righty has just eight professional innings under his belt, as injuries have already had a major impact on his development and long-term outlook.

Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Out with biceps issue

Gunnar Hoglund hasn't pitched since Aug. 6 due to a biceps issue, Bill Moriarty of A's Farm reports. After making his return from Tommy John surgery, Hoglund managed to make all of three appearances totaling eight scoreless innings before being shut down. The A's are hoping he'll be able to pitch in fall instructs next month, but that doesn't seem to be a certainty. Hoglund has tremendous upside, but his ongoing arm issues mean he comes with far more risk than your average college arm.

Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Debuting for Single-A club

Single-A Stockton activated Gunnar Hoglund (elbow) from its injured list Tuesday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.Hoglund is scheduled to make his full-season debut this week after he was on the shelf for the first four months of the 2022 campaign while recovering from the Tommy John procedure he underwent in May 2021. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on July 23 and looked sharp over his two appearances, during which he struck out seven batters over five innings while allowing one unearned run.

Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund: Makes pro debut

Gunnar Hoglund (elbow) made his first rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League on Saturday, allowing an unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts in two innings.Hoglund had been sidelined since even before he was drafted last year due to Tommy John surgery, so this was actually his professional debut. He'll probably get another appearance or two in rookie ball before settling in at either Single-A or High-A for the duration of the season. Expect the A's to handle the 22-year-old righty with kid gloves for the duration of 2022, but he could advance quickly next season if he lives up to his billing.

Blue Jays' Gunnar Hoglund: Headed to Oakland

Gunnar Hoglund was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Athletics on Wednesday along with Kevin Smith, Zach Logue and Kirby Snead in exchange for Matt Chapman, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The 22-year-old righty once had a chance to be the first overall pick in 2021, but he needed Tommy John surgery in May of 2021, so he fell to the Blue Jays at pick 19. Blue Jays' Gunnar Hoglund: Nearing mound work

Gunnar Hoglund (elbow) has been throwing off flat ground for four months and hopes to advance to mound work soon, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.Hoglund was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 19th pick in last year's draft despite the fact he'd undergone Tommy John surgery in May. He appears to be recovering on schedule and has been able to throw from 120 feet, but he'll need to stretch out to 150 feet before he gets back on a mound. A typical recovery timeline would see him miss the early part of the upcoming season, but he should be able to make his professional debut at some point over the summer.
