A more accurate timeline may emerge after he goes under the knife.

Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Won't return in 2025

Tyler Locklear (elbow) will miss the remainder of the season, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.Left elbow inflammation sent Locklear to the injured list Monday, and it seems the Arizona Diamondbacks have already decided to keep him shut down for the rest of the season. The 24-year-old first baseman is slated for further imaging to determine the extent of his injury, and there's a chance he may go under the knife to address the issue. He'll finish 2025 with a .175/.267/.262 slash line through 116 MLB plate appearances alongside three home runs, six RBI, 11 runs scored and three stolen bases. With Locklear sidelined, Ildemaro Vargas is the favorite to take over as Arizona's first baseman for the rest of the year.

Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Absent from lineup

Tyler Locklear is not in the lineup for Monday's contest versus the Giants.Locklear had made 10 straight starts at first base after Pavin Smith (quadriceps) was lost for the season, but he's just 5-for-33 with 14 strikeouts over that stretch. Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Homers in extra-inning loss

Tyler Locklear went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 7-5 extra-inning loss to the Rangers.Locklear hit his third homer of the year in the second inning. His last long ball also came against Texas on Aug. 11. The first baseman's blast snapped an 0-for-20 skid over his previous seven games. Despite those struggles, he's set to start a majority of the time at first base following Pavin Smith's season-ending quad injury. Locklear is batting just .163 with six RBI, nine runs scored and two stolen bases over 97 plate appearances, so he still has plenty of work to do to prove himself in the majors.

Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: More playing time coming

Tyler Locklear started at first base and went 0-for-4 in Friday's 3-0 win over the Dodgers. The news that Pavin Smith (quadriceps) landed on the 10-day injured list Friday opens the door for Locklear to see more playing time. The righty-hitting first baseman was in Friday's starting nine against a left-hander (Blake Snell), which is normal, and manager Torey Lovullo told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that Locklear's role will expand for him to face certain right-handers as well. Utility infielder Ildemaro Vargas, a switch hitter, may also play against righties.

Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Records two RBI in win

Tyler Locklear went 0-for-3, was hit by a pitch and had two RBI in Thursday's 6-4 win over Milwaukee.Locklear came to the plate twice with the bases loaded and managed to plate a run without getting a base hit. He was hit by a pitch in the second inning and then drove in a run on fielder's choice in the third. The right-handed hitting Locklear got the start at first base against a lefty (Jose Quintana) in the first game for Arizona without Pavin Smith, who flew back to Phoenix to undergo imaging on a quadriceps injury. Locklear could see regular opportunities while Smith is unavailable, although a .528 OPS over 22 games since joining the Arizona Diamondbacks leaves him vulnerable.

Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Poised to regain regular role

Tyler Locklear is expected to take over as the Arizona Diamondbacks' primary first baseman due to Pavin Smith's (quadriceps) likely placement on the injured list following Thursday's game against the Brewers, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.Since being acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline, Locklear has gotten off to a listless start to his time with the Diamondbacks, slashing just .186/.269/.271 with two home runs and a 37.2 percent strikeout rate over 21 games. The right-handed-hitting Locklear had moved into the short side of a platoon at first base after Smith moved past an oblique injury and was activated from the IL on Aug. 18, but the latter player will end up returning to the IL less than two weeks later due to a new injury. The Diamondbacks don't have an obvious option to use in a platoon with Locklear while Smith is out, so Locklear should have the opportunity to play fairly regularly against right-handers.

Tyler Locklear is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians.Locklear has now been on the bench for two straight games versus right-handers since Pavin Smith returned from the injured list. While the 24-year-old should operate as more than a short-side platoon bat, it's clear that Smith will put a significant dent in Locklear's playing time.
