Sergio Santos (elbow) elected free agency Monday.Santos struggled in 2015 while splitting time with the Dodgers and Yankees, pitching to a 4.96 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The 32-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in June, so wherever he ends up in free agency, Santos likely won't be available until the second half of the season at the earliest.

New York Yankees pitcher Sergio Santos is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, reports NJ.com. "He had the elbow issue last year, and he chose to rehab it and it manifested this year. It's disappointing because we saw what he was capable of doing down in Florida," manager Joe Girardi said, per MLB.com. "He's heartbroken. It was difficult for him." Santos was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Yankees sign reliever Sergio Santos to big-league contract
The New York Yankees signed relief pitcher Sergio Santos to a major-league contract and he will join their bullpen for Saturday's game, the team announced. Santos agreed to a minor-league deal with the Yankees in early June after electing to become a free agent when the Dodgers designated him for assignment. Santos has a 4.73 ERA in 13 1/3 innings this season. He recorded 30 saves for the White Sox in 2011.

Santos, who was the White Sox's closer in 2011, posted a 4.73 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Dodgers. He had 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 13 1/3 innings.

Dodgers option six players to the minors Saturday
The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to option outfielders Chris Heisey, Enrique Hernandez, pitchers Adam Liberatore, Sergio Santos, David Aardsma and David Huff to their minor league teams, according to MLB.com. Liberatore did not allow a run in 10 1/3 innings of work this spring with nine strikeouts and three walks. Aardsma posted a 2.00 ERA with nine strikeouts in nine appearances this spring.

"I came here as prepared as I could," Santos said. "I didn't want to be seen as a rehab pitcher. I'm healthy, and today I had a good feel for all three of my pitches." Santos dealt with elbow issues last season but has shared the team lead with five appearances this spring in his bid to earn a spot in the bullpen.
