Padres' Skip Schumaker: Receives invite to major league spring training

Skip Schumaker received an invite to the San Diego Padres' major league spring training Wednesday. The recently acquired Schumaker is one of two non-roster invitees in the Padres camp alongside prized prospect Hunter Renfroe. The veteran utility man appeared in 131 games with the Reds last season, slashing .242/.306/.336 to go with 51 strikeouts and 23 walks across 244 at-bats. His big league experience and versatility, as well as his left-handed bat, could give him a shot at landing a bench spot out of spring training.

Padres' Skip Schumaker: Signs minor league contract with Padres

The San Diego Padres signed Skip Schumaker to a minor league contract Monday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.Schumaker spent last season serving in a situational role, which translated to a .242/.306/.336 slash line, one homer, and two stolen bases in 244 at-bats across 131 games. Reds' Hamilton, Byrd, Mesoraco out of lineup Sunday

Cincinnati Reds outfielders Billy Hamilton and Marlon Byrd are joining catcher Devin Mesoraco (hip) on the bench for Sunday's game against the Braves. Hamilton is getting a break after making 11 straight starts out of the leadoff spot, while Byrd has seen 11 straight starts in left field. It's just a regular day off for both players, who will get a two-day break due to the team's scheduled off-day Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Both Hamilton and Byrd are available if needed Sunday. With the pair out, Skip Schumaker will lead off and play left field, while Brennan Boesch will bat seventh and play center field. Mesoraco hasn't appeared in the starting lineup since the first week of the season, as he's continued to rehab from a left hip impingement while remaining on the active roster. The Reds are road favorites (-142) in Atlanta with Johnny Cueto on the mound.
