Former Pirates, Yankees pitcher Jeff Karstens officially retires
Former Pirates and Yankees pitcher Jeff Karstens, 32, announced on Twitter Sunday that he has officially retired from baseball. Karstens has not pitched in the major leagues since 2012, sidelined with a number of shoulder injuries that culminated with surgery to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder in 2013. Karstens pitched in the major leagues from 2006-2012, posting a career record of 26-40 with a 4.44 ERA.

Jeff Karstens to work out for teams in January
Free-agent pitcher Jeff Karstens is said to be pain-free and participating in his normal winter throwing program, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reports, adding that Karstens plans to work out for interested teams in January. Karstens underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean up his rotator cuff and labrum in June and began throwing in August. He made just two minor-league appearances last season.

Marlon Byrd, Justin Morneau among Pirates' free agents
In addition to A.J. Burnett, who was not extended a qualifying offer, the Pittsburgh Pirates have had several players declare free agency, including relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, shortstop Clint Barmes, catcher John Buck, outfielder Marlon Byrd, starting pitcher Jeff Karstens and first baseman Justin Morneau. Burnett is expected to re-sign with the Pirates if he doesn't retire. The Pirates have also expressed interest in bringing back Byrd, Morneau and Barmes.

Jeff Karstens begins throwing
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens was able to play catch for the first time Friday, 10 weeks removed from shoulder surgery. He was able to throw off flat ground yet again Saturday, and is expected to begin a throwing program Monday, according to MLB.com.

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens posted on Twitter over the weekend he will start throwing soon and is "feeling better than ever" six weeks after having shoulder surgery. Karstens has not pitched in 2013 after going 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) last season.

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens, on the 60-day disabled list, told MLB.com he will have the stitches from his shoulder removed Sunday, nine days after his arthroscopic surgery to clean up the rotator cuff and labrum. The Pirates have not set a timetable for his return.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jeff Karstens, who is recovering from shoulder inflammation, has traveled with Triple-A Indianapolis for a weekend series in Buffalo but has not been scheduled for a rehab start.
