    Ricky Romero: Playing days over

Ricardo Romero announced Friday in a personal essay posted on Sportsnet.ca that he has retired from baseball.Romero, 34, was the No. 6 overall pick in the vaunted 2005 first-year player draft. The lefty was one of nine first-round selections in the class to make an MLB All-Star team, but Romero never came close to replicating the 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 225 innings he delivered for the Blue Jays in 2011. Romero suffered from extreme bouts of wildness throughout the 2012 season and was banished to the minors following 2013 spring training. He made just four appearances at the big-league level thereafter, bouncing around multiple levels of the minors and spending time in the Mexican League before he was out of baseball in 2018. The 34-year-old officially wraps up his once-promising big-league career with a 51-45 record, 4.16 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 129 outings (127 starts) over parts of five seasons, all with Toronto.

Giants' Ricky Romero: Returns to Giants on minor league pact

Ricky Romero re-signed with the San Francisco Giants on a minor league contract, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.Romero spent the bulk of the 2016 season on the shelf with an injury, but the Giants decided to bring him back as organizational depth now that he's back to full health. Given the strong options in the Giants rotation, the left-hander likely won't be able to crack the major league roster unless he moves to the bullpen.

Giants' Ricky Romero: Pitches four innings

Ricky Romero provided four shutout innings on Monday against Las Vegas, only allowing four batters to reach base while recording three strikeouts.Romero has only pitched in 14 games since 2013, and will begin this season with Triple-A Sacramento. A former starter for four years with the Blue Jays, Romero is trying to bounce back from a bad stretch over the past couple seasons, as he is still trying to win his first start at any level since 2013. During four appearances this spring, the 31-year-old gave up two runs and five hits in 5.2 innings. If Romero can rediscover his old form, he could provide depth in the San Francisco Giants bullpen towards the end of the season, but it would be overly optimistic to suspect that scenario to play out.
