Report: Raul Ibanez withdraws from Rays' managerial search

The list of managerial candidates for the Tampa Bay Rays was reduced by one Thursday after Raul Ibanez withdrew his name due to family considerations, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The remaining two candidates are Kevin Cash and Don Wakamatsu. Ibanez was a finalist for the job despite having no managerial experience. He just finished his 19th season in the majors, batting .167 with five home runs and 26 RBI in 90 games between the Angels and Royals. He is a career .272 hitter with a .465 slugging percentage and .801 OPS in 2,161 games.

Raul Ibanez a finalist for Rays job

Kansas City Royals outfielder Raul Ibanez is one of the three finalists for the Tampa Bay Rays manager position, according to the Tampa Bay Times.  The 42-year-old hit .167 over 246 at-bats last season, and was a surprise candidate for the position. He'll have to beat out Kevin Cash and Dom Wakamatsu. It's unclear if Ibanez will continue to look for work as a player if he doesn't get the job.

    Raul Ibanez released by Angels

The Los Angeles Angels have released struggling veteran outfielder Raul Ibanez. The 42-year-old Ibanez emerged from a season-long slump with hits in each of his first three games, but it wasn't enough to save him. His recent surge served only to improve his stat line to .157/.258/.265. Ibanez hit three home runs early in the year after slugging 29 in 2013, but had not gone deep since April 14.

C.J. Cron becoming sadly familiar with part-time role

A strict platoon situation has prevented promising Los Angeles Angels designated hitter C.J. Cron from starting since June 11. He continued to sit when the team played National League rules in Atlanta and remained on the bench for three games in Cleveland against right-handed starters. Mike Scioscia has opted to remain loyal to 43-year-old Raul Ibanez against righties despite his .153/.257/.258 stat line. "It's how it works," Cron told MLB.com. "Obviously, I want to be in there as much as possible. But I'm not in the lineup, so I'll be ready in case a pinch-hit [opportunity] comes, or whatever."

Raul Ibanez continues to play despite struggles

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Raul Ibanez continues to get playing time during his slump, according to the Los Angeles Times.  Though the team was rained out Wednesday, Ibanez was slated to start his third consecutive game. Ibanez didn't have particularly strong numbers against starting pitcher Justin Masterson, but manager Mike Scioscia said Ibanez has been making strides in the batter's box.  Ibanez starting comes at the expense of C.J. Cron. Cron has shown solid skills in the majors, but could head back to the minors in order to get consistent at-bats if Ibanez continues to get time. Ibanez is expected to be in the team's starting lineup Thursday.
