We should see at least one rookie quarterback start in Week 1 of the 2020 season, and at least two more should join him on the field before long. And all three landed in pretty ideal spots for their day one Fantasy values. The rest of the class might need some time, and that's okay. For those of you in longer-term Fantasy leagues, taking a late-round flier could pay off in the long run.
Get to know the incoming rookie class at quarterback with the Fantasy Football Today team's breakdowns of every prospect. We went in depth on the first six quarterbacks taken and their Fantasy prospects, with links to all six below, and we'll have instant reactions to the rest of the class right under that. Get to know the next generation of Fantasy passers right here:
- Joe Burrow to the Bengals
- Tua Tagovailoa to the Dolphins
- Justin Herbert to the Chargers
- Jordan Love to the Packers
- Jalen Hurts to the Eagles
- Jacob Eason to the Colts
Pick No. 125: Jets select James Morgan
Unless you happen to work with my boss, you may not have even had James Morgan on your radar as an NFL quarterback prospect. Well, that's not totally true. Adam Gase and the Jets were clearly interested as they traded up to select him on Saturday.
Morgan is a true pocket passer who looks like an NFL quarterback getting off the bus. His best season was his junior year when he threw for 2,727 yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Morgan's profile gives him projectable upside, but we didn't really see it show up in his production in five years at Bowling Green and FIU.
Morgan will back up Sam Darnold in New York, who isn't going anywhere any time soon. It will likely take an injury for Morgan to get on the field in the next three years. He should only be drafted in deep superflex leagues, and even then I wouldn't consider him before Round 4 of a rookie draft.
Pick No. 167: Bills select Jake Fromm
There was some thought that Fromm might be drafted somewhere he could eventually challenge to be a starter, but he slipped further than expected and ended up landing behind Josh Allen in Buffalo, where his chances of seeing the field in the short or long run are pretty slim.
Fromm's best trait is that he was a huge winner in college. He started at a young age and went 36-7 overall as a starter, but never really put up huge numbers. Then he tested below average in pretty much every way at the Combine, backing up the somewhat unimpressive numbers. With Allen entrenched as quarterback of the future, Fromm figures to be just a backup - though he does profile as the kind of backup who will stick around in the league for a long time, for what it's worth. However, unless something goes very wrong with Allen, he won't have any Fantasy appeal for a long time.
Pick No. 189: Jaguars select Jake Luton
Give it to the Jaguars, they're not going to shoehorn players into their QB spot. After they took a late-round flier on Gardner Minshew, an undersized player who was incredible productive in college and made plenty of plays with his feet, they take a flier on Luton, who is pretty much the exact opposite player. He's a gigantic statue with a canon arm who passed for nearly 2,000 yards fewer than Minshew in their respective senior seasons.
Luton wasn't particularly efficient or accurate as a passer, so there's a lot of room for his game to improve. Minshew will be the starter to open the season, but if he falters, Luton could get a chance to throw to a very talented receiving corps. Luton is an older prospect, so if it doesn't happen soon, he probably doesn't have a significant margin for error. Outside of the deepest Dynasty leagues, Luton has very little appeal.
Pick No. 224: Titans grab Cole McDonald
There were four quarterbacks taken in the seventh round, each of whom will likely compete for backup jobs. McDonald is the most intriguing of the bunch, a two-year starter at Hawai'i who ran a 4.58 40-yard dash at 6 feet 3 inches. McDonald has plenty of size and athleticism to go along with a big arm, and will likely back up Ryan Tannehill.
Pick No. 231: Cowboys select Ben DiNucci
DiNucci started his college career at Pitt, but transferred to James Madison for his final two seasons. He'll compete for the backup job behind Dak Prescott.
Pick No. 240: Saints pick Tommy Stevens
The Saints actually traded back into the seventh round to acquire Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens. Stevens stands 6-foot-5 but reportedly ran a 4.49 at his pro day, and played RB and WR along with QB while at Penn State, before transferring to Mississippi State. He looks like the Saints' backup plan to Taysom Hill, which is a wild thing to write.
Pick No. 244: Vikings pick Nate Stanley
Stanley was a three-year starter at Iowa and was something of a game manager. He'll compete to back up Kirk Cousins.
