The 49ers released Paul on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Paul was competing with a plethora of other candidates for the No. 3 tight end spot, and it appears he did not do much to make an impression. He was let go to bring in another potential depth tight end. The veteran's potential options could be narrowing at this point in his career.
