Foles announced his retirement from professional football Thursday via social media. Best remembered for leading Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl championship during the 2017 season and taking home the game's MVP honors in the 41-33 win over the Patriots, Foles will will officially retire as a member of the Eagles during the team's Sept. 16 home opener versus the Falcons. Selected by the Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Foles tied a single-game NFL record with seven passing touchdowns in a game against the Raiders in 2013 during his first stint in Philadelphia, then matched another NFL record with 25 consecutive completions in a game in 2018 during his second stint with the team. In addition to his two stints with Philadelphia, Foles also suited up for the Rams, Chiefs, Jaguars, Bears and Colts during an 11-year NFL career.

The Colts released Foles on Friday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. This was always coming for Foles after the Colts added Gardner Minshew in free agency and then Anthony Richardson in the 2023 NFL Draft at No. 4 overall. The move saves Indy $2.1 million against the cap. Foles will look for backup work elsewhere after going 0-2 with a 59.5 percent completion rate, zero touchdowns and four interceptions in two starts last year.

Foles (ribs) won't play Sunday against the Texans, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. Interim coach Jeff Saturday said Foles is "really sore" after exiting the team's Week 17 loss to the Giants with a rib injury, so the veteran quarterback will sit out the regular-season finale. Sam Ehlinger will draw another start, while Matt Ryan will operate as the backup.

Interim head coach Jeff Saturday confirmed Foles will remain the Colts' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Giants, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Despite struggling mightily in his first extended action of the season in Monday's 20-3 loss to the Chargers, Foles will be awarded another start while the Colts continue to look for an answer at quarterback while the campaign winds down. Foles completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions while taking seven sacks in the Week 16 loss. If Foles is unable to show much improvement during the upcoming weekend, Saturday could turn to Matt Ryan or second-year player Sam Ehlinger to start the Jan. 8 season finale versus the Texans.

Foles will start at quarterback in Monday's game against the Chargers, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts official site reports. "I feel like Nick will give us a better chance to win these last three games," interim head coach Jeff Saturday said Wednesday. Foles will take over the reins of the Indianapolis offense for Matt Ryan, who returns to the bench after the 4-9-1 Colts surrendered a 33-point lead in last week's overtime loss to the Vikings. Though Foles' recent track record doesn't make him a comfortable starting option in leagues that start just one quarterback, he could have some utility in two-quarterback or superflex formats Week 16. Saturday said that he hasn't decided whether Ryan or Sam Ehlinger will back up Foles on Monday, while adding that Indianapolis' plan at quarterback will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis for the final three games of the season.
