The Panthers released Matthews on Thursday. Matthews played 26 offensive snaps across four regular-season games last season but didn't record a catch on just one target. He inked a futures deal with Carolina back in January but is now out of a roster spot following the NFL Draft.

Carolina signed Matthews to a reserve/futures contract Tuesday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports. Matthews appeared in four games with the Panthers in 2024, drawing just one target for zero receptions on a total of 26 offensive snaps. Carolina also signed Dominique Dafney to a similar deal Tuesday, so the two may have to compete to distinguish themselves during the offseason.

Matthews was cut from Carolina's 53-man roster earlier in the week but is back with the team's practice squad, where he spent the early part of the season. The 32-year-old hasn't drawn a target on 26 offensive snaps across four appearances this season.

Carolina waived Matthews on Tuesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports. Matthews signed onto Carolina's active roster from its practice squad less than two weeks ago, but now he's on track to become a free agent if he's not claimed by another team during the current waiver period. If that doesn't happen, he'd be a candidate to potentially rejoin the Panthers' practice squad.

Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reported Saturday that Matthews was expected to be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, but the 2014 second-round pick has been signed to the 53-man roster instead. With Feleipe Franks (concussion) ruled out for Sunday's game against New Orleans and Tommy Tremble (back) listed as questionable, Matthews could see meaningful snaps on offense behind rookie Ja'Tavion Sanders and Ian Thomas.
