McDermott (undisclosed) had a tryout with Houston on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. McDermott spent all of last season on the Rams' injured reserve list but is presumably now healthy. The veteran tackle has 55 career regular-season games (including 17 starts) under his belt across stints with the Bills, Jets and Patriots.

McDermott (head) has been ruled out for Sunday night's game against the Broncos. McDermott was forced to exit the Patriots' Week 15 game against Kansas City and failed to practice in any capacity during the week. Vederian Lowe will take over at left tackle if Trent Brown (hand) can't suit up.

The Patriots signed McDermott off the practice squad Saturday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. The move corresponds with New England waiving quarterback Will Grier. McDermott joined the Patriots' practice squad Oct. 17 after reaching an injury settlement with the team Sept. 8. With offensive tackles Calvin Anderson (illness) and Tyrone Wheatley (knee) both on IR, McDermott will provide depth behind Mike Onwenu and Trent Brown.

McDermott spent time with New England before being let go with an injury settlement. Now that he's healthy, the veteran tackle will get a chance to handle an emergency depth role with a familiar team.
