• Cardinals' Trey Benson: Reverts to IR

  08/25/2026 • By RotoWire

Benson (knee) reverted to the Cardinals' injured reserve list Tuesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Benson underwent surgery in early October last year for a meniscus injury he suffered in the Cardinals' Week 4 loss to the Seahawks, but after returning the running back could never get right and he had trouble staying on the practice field. The 24-year-old's struggles, combined with the Cardinals' crowded running back room, caused him to be placed on waivers to begin the week, and there were no takers. If he can fix his knee troubles he could negotiate an injury settlement in an attempt to find another team to play for in 2026.

Benson (knee) was waived/injured by the Cardinals on Monday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports. Benson has been in and out of practice throughout training camp due to lingering issues with his surgically repaired left knee that kept him sidelined after Week 4 last season. Arizona made two notable additions to its backfield this offseason in 2026 third overall pick Jeremiyah Love (ankle) and free-agent addition Tyler Allgeier and still retains long-time starter James Conner (foot). Assuming Benson clears waivers Tuesday, he'll revert to injured reserve.

Benson (knee) has not been present for any portion of the Cardinals' previous two full-squad practices this week, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. After stretching with the team ahead of Monday's walkthrough practice, Benson hasn't since been seen by the media. He's been dealing with the knee injury all summer after missing the final 14 weeks of the 2025 campaign with an injury to the same knee. Unable to practice much or play so far this summer, Benson could be on the outside looking in for a roster spot, considering he doesn't play special teams.

Benson (knee) is in attendance for Monday's practice, Tyler Drake of ArizonaSports.com reports. Benson has been in and out of practice since his left knee flared up two weeks ago, missing Thursday's preseason game at Las Vegas in the process. With rookie first-round pick Jeremiyah Love being diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain this weekend, Benson has a chance to stake a claim on the RB depth chart behind offseason addition Tyler Allgeier for as long as Love is sidelined. Moreover, fellow back James Conner continues to sit out 11-on-11 drills due to a foot injury, meaning Benson currently is the highest profile player at the position that can make a leap, assuming he doesn't suffer additional setbacks with his own health concern.

• Cardinals' Trey Benson: Back at practice Tuesday

  08/04/2026 • By RotoWire

Benson (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Bo Brack of GoPHNX.com reports. Benson sat out Monday's session due to discomfort in his left knee, which stems back to the concern that sidelined him after Week 4 last season. The "little flair-up [sic]," as coach Mike LaFleur described it, probably won't keep Benson off the field long, but it remains to be seen if the third-year pro will be cleared to play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Panthers. Benson is vying for slotting with James Conner (foot) behind rookie first-round pick Jeremiyah Love and offseason pickup Tyler Allgeier in the Cardinals backfield.
