Tight end trio helps Steelers defeat Packers

The Pittsburgh Steelers used three tight ends Sunday at Green Bay and all of them made small contributions to the victory. The most interesting was a 30-yard grab by David Paulson from Mat McBriar on the first possession of the second half off a fake punt. The catch led to a touchdown that put Pittsburgh ahead. Another rare contributor as a pass-catcher who played the role of hero was Matt Spaeth, who snagged an 11-yard scoring strike from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger later in that quarter to again put his team up. Starting tight end Heath Miller pitched in with three receptions for 17 yards.

    David Paulson coughs it up

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end David Paulson had a 34-yard catch against the Bengals, but he was stripped at the end of the play by cornerback Adam Jones, who recovered the fumble. Paulson caught three of his four targets for 49 yards. Paulson, whose targets are sure to go down once Heath Miller returns, plays the Bears in Week 3.

Steelers to use 'committee' approach at TE

With starting tight end Heath Miller (knee) sidelined, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday the team will use a "committee" approach at tight end. The Steelers have five tight ends on the roster -- Miller, Matt Spaeth, David Johnson, David Paulson and Michael Palmer. Though, Spaeth (foot) could join Miller on the sidelines. Tomlin said Tuesday Spaeth is an option to be placed on the injured reserve-designated to return list.

Tight end David Paulson starts, gets big workload

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end David Paulson started Monday night's game against Washington and played 39 snaps, the same as starting wideouts Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders, according to Pro Football Focus. Paulsen was targeted twice and caught a 26-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger. Report: Steelers not in market for veteran tight end

With Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth and David Johnson sidelined, David Paulson is the Pittsburgh Steelers' No. 1 tight end. But Pittsburgh isn't in the market to add a veteran tight end like the Ravens did when they signed Dallas Clark, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Johnson, coming off arthroscopic knee surgery, plans to play in a preseason game. And the Steelers expect to get Miller and Spaeth back "at various points this season," the report said.

Steelers tight end depth chart takes hit with Matt Spaeth injury

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth is out eight to 10 weeks due to a foot injury, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday. He has a Lisfranc sprain in his foot that could require surgery to repair. The Steelers have been hit hard by injuries this season, and this could leave rookie David Paulson as the team's top option if Heath Miller cannot return from the PUP list by the time the season begins.

Heath Miller's status still up in the air

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller led the team in receptions last year but isn't expected to do the same this year. In fact, after tearing an ACL late last season, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says "no one within the organization knows" when Miller will even be ready to play. The Steelers open training camp Friday and Miller is expected to start on the Physically Unable to Perform list. David Paulson and Matt Spaeth are expected to compete for playing time to replace Miller on the field.
