Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Sees action in just two games in 2017

Ryan Mallett appeared in just two games in 2017, completing nine of 16 passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns. The two times Mallett was called upon were in extraordinary circumstances: The first came when Baltimore was trailing by a significant margin in a loss to the Jaguars, and the second occurred when starter Joe Flacco was knocked out of Baltimore's win over Miami. He looked competent against the Jaguars, but the garbage time wrinkle makes it tough to extrapolate much from that performance. His role after taking over for Flacco against the Dolphins was primarily to hand off the ball with the Baltimore Ravens in run-out-the-clock mode. Looking ahead, Mallett is set to hit free agency this offseason and it's unclear whether Baltimore is interested in bringing him back or going in another direction at the backup quarterback spot. It's worth noting that the Ravens could get out of their deal with Flacco after the 2019 season, which opens the possibility of the team spending a draft pick on a developmental signal caller for the future instead of bringing back a pricier veteran such as Mallett. In any case, Mallett's outlook for 2018 will be inking a deal as a backup.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Questionable for Sunday

Ryan Mallett is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns due to an illness.Mallett was added to the injury report Friday as a limited participant. The 29-year-old seems more likely to suit up than not Sunday, especially since the Baltimore Ravens don't have a third quarterback on the 53-man roster. The team would likely promote Josh Woodrum from the practice squad to serve as Joe Flacco's backup Sunday if Mallett is trending in the wrong direction over the weekend.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Fires touchdown pass in emergency duty

Ryan Mallett, who came into the game in relief of Joe Flacco (concussion), completed three of seven passes for 20 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Thursday's 40-0 win over the Dolphins. He also netted minus-3 yards on four carries and fumbled once.Mallett didn't have to do a whole lot after taking over for Flacco with 2:50 remaining in the second quarter and the ball on the Dolphins' five-yard line. He did cap off that possession with a two-yard scoring strike to Benjamin Watson, but he threw just six more passes on the evening. Meanwhile, tailbacks Alex Collins and Javorius Allen combined for 168 rushing yards, while C.J. Mosley and Jimmy Smith both notched pick-sixes off Matt Moore, taking all the pressure off Mallett to be anything more than a game manager. However, the 29-year-old could find himself with a lot more on his shoulders if Flacco is unable to suit up in Week 9 against the Titans.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Struggles in opener

Ryan Mallett played the entire first half of Thursday's preseason opener against Washington, completing nine of 18 passes for 58 yards. The Baltimore Ravens still jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, thanks to a dominant performance from their own defense combined with some untimely penalties by the opposing defense. Mallett's poor showing will only add to the whispers that Baltimore is interested in acquiring a better backup, even though the team hopes Joe Flacco (back) will be ready at some point this preseason.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Draws start for preseason opener, will play 'extensively'

Ryan Mallett will get the start in Thursday's preseason game against the Redskins and is expected to also see significant playing time, Garrett Downing of the team's official site reports. "I think Ryan will probably play pretty extensively. How much that ends up being will be determined...It's an opportunity for Ryan to get ready," said coach John Harbaugh. With Joe Flacco still nursing a back injury, Mallett will work with the first-team offense in Thursday's exhibition. Mallett has reportedly had an up-and-down camp to this point, so the pressure will be on him to perform well Thursday in order to convince the Baltimore Ravens' brass that he is capable of handling the offense if Flacco's injury continues to linger. According to Downing, Mallett will also work with the second-team offense Thursday, so there's a chance he'll play the entire first half against the Redskins.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Plays limited role as backup in 2016

Ryan Mallett went 3-for-6 passing for 26 yards and one interception across four appearances in 2016.With Joe Flacco staying healthy, Mallett rarely saw any playing time this season. His longest appearance lasted 13 snaps in Week 13 during a blowout win over the Dolphins, but he only attempted three passes in that outing. Mallett is set to hit free agency this offseason, but the Baltimore Ravens could retain him in order to keep a backup with some starting experience on the roster behind Flacco.

Ravens' Ryan Mallett: Plays well against Colts

Ryan Mallett completed six of eight passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Colts.Joe Flacco (knee) was held out for a second straight week, allowing Mallett to play the first three drives of Saturday's game. No. 3 quarterback Josh Johnson was also reasonably effective, completing 11 of 16 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, with five carries for another 40 yards. Regardless, there's been no indication that Mallett is in danger of losing the No. 2 quarterback job.
