Report: Jonathan Martin (back) retiring from football
Former Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Jonathan Martin, who played a major role in Miami's bullying scandal, is retiring from the NFL due to a back issue that will require surgery, a source told NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport. Martin was waived by the 49ers in March and picked up by the Carolina Panthers; however, the back injury would have kept him out of action for the entire season, and Martin decided to call it quits. Martin left the Dolphins during the 2013 season citing locker room issues that mainly included bullying by teammate Richie Incognito. He was traded to the 49ers, where he was reunited with his former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, starting nine games with the team.

Panthers OT Jonathan Martin excited about new opportunity
Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Jonathan Martin is looking forward to being a part of the team, reports the team's official website. He also believes that being with the Panthers is an ideal fit. "I'm excited to be a part of a team that's had a lot of success recently," Martin said. "I know a little bit about coach Ron Rivera and (offensive line) coach (John) Matsko and I'm excited about working with them and being successful here." Martin, a former second-round draft choice of the Dolphins, was surprised by the fact that he only spent one year with the 49ers. "It was a little surprising not being in San Francisco for another year, but that's the nature of the business," Martin said. "I'm glad I got another opportunity. I'm excited to be a part of this group." Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman likes the experience that Martin brings to the team. "Our goal is to build the strongest roster possible and add competition at every position,"Gettleman said. "Jonathan brings quality experience to our offensive line, having started 32 games in his career at both tackle spots." Martin wants to become a better player, and he appreciates the opportunity given to him by the Panthers. "At this point it is firmly in the past," Martin said. "I want to have a successful career playing football. I'm lucky to have gotten an opportunity here in Carolina."

Jonathan Martin ready to fill in as starting tackle
The loss of Anthony Davis to a hamstring injury will likely result in Jonathan Martin take over at right tackle for the San Francisco 49ers against Dallas on Sunday. Martin who was acquired for a conditional seventh-round pick from Miami in the offseason, would be making his first appearance on an NFL field since Oct. 27, after which he left the Dolphins in the midst of a bullying scandal. "I want to go out there and play a good game, you know," Martin told the team website, which is claiming that Martin improved as the preseason progressed. "Get off on the right foot, start the season right. Anthony is still the starter, but I'm going to play my best. I've started before in this league, so I'm confident in my ability and I'm excited to get it going."

Differing reports on Jonathan Martin's future with Miami
While NFL Network reports that it's "not impossible" for embattled offensive lineman Jonathan Martin to return to the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Herald believes there's no chance of a return. Martin left the team last season citing locker room issues that mainly included bullying by teammate Richie Incognito. The Herald surmises that several Dolphins players were unhappy with how Martin left the team and that they might not welcome him back. The paper also noted that if the team welcomed Martin back then the message it would send to the roster could be devastating as anyone could just pick up and leave the team without serious repercussions.
