Tim Lelito: Cut loose by Detroit

The Lions waived Tim Lelito (thigh) from injured reserve Tuesday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.Lelito landed on IR after suffering the thigh injury a little over a week ago. The injury was never considered a season-ending one for the offensive lineman, so once he's fully recovered from the issue, he could latch on with another team.

Lions' Tim Lelito: Lands deal with Detroit

The Detroit Lions signed Tim Lelito to a contract Tuesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.Lelito will take the roster spot of guard/tackle Joe Dahl (lower leg), who was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. Saints to start Jahri Evans, Tim Lelito at guard in 2015

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said at the annual NFL meeting that he doesn't think the moves the team has made this offseason have opened any holes in the starting lineup, indicating specifically that Tim Lelito would join Jahri Evans as the team's starting guards after the departure of Ben Grubbs, Saints.com reports. "Those aren’t holes," Payton said about losing Grubbs and middle linebacker Curtis Lofton. "We’re not moving a player if we feel like there’s no…we feel like we have a pretty good idea of how everything is lining up. We’ve got a center we know that starts in this NFL, we’ve got a guard, (Tim) Lelito will play left guard, Jahri Evans is the right guard. The same way at receiver. So we weren’t looking to make a move that created another 'must'." Lelito played 294 snaps on offense last season, per Pro Football Focus, and graded out positively as a run blocker and negatively as a pass blocker.  He was an undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State in 2013.

    Saints going young at center

With Brian De La Puente having signed with the Bears, the New Orleans Saints will have a competition at center this summer, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The current contenders are second-year guard Tim Lelito and rookie Matt Armstrong, both of whom played at Division II Grand Valley State. "I think for us with two veteran guards in Ben (Grubbs) and Jahri (Evans) it is going to make it easier for a center," general manager Mickey Loomis told the paper. "With a quarterback like Drew (Brees), who does a lot of the identifications and makes a lot of the calls, that makes it easier, so it definitely makes it possible, probably a little easier with our team than some others."
