Cardinals' James Conner: Not expected to return Week 9
Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said Tuesday that James Conner (foot) won't return from IR this week, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.Though LaFleur said last week that Conner could "potentially" play this season, that won't happen in Week 9. The veteran running back continues to work his way back from a right foot injury and has not yet been cleared to practice. Arizona is dealing with multiple injuries in its backfield, including to Jeremiyah Love (ankle - IR) and Bam Knight (concussion), so Conner could have provided a big boost if he'd been able to work his way back this week. Instead, the team will turn to Tyler Allgeier to lead its backfield, with Evan Hull serving as his primary backup if Knight is unable to suit up Sunday against Seattle.

Cardinals' James Conner: Could 'potentially' play in 2026
When asked Monday if James Conner (foot) will play this season, coach Mike LaFleur said "potentially," Dani Sureck of the Arizona Cardinals' official site reports. It's a typical LaFleur non-answer type of answer. It was reported two weeks ago that Conner was close to practicing, but there's been no indication his 21-day practice window is close to being opened by the Cardinals. There's not much room on the depth chart for another running back that doesn't play special teams in Arizona.

Cardinals' James Conner: May be close to practicing
James Conner (foot) is "getting close" to practicing, but the Arizona Cardinals aren't expected to open his 21-day evaluation window this week, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.Conner's 2025 season was cut short due to a right foot injury that he addressed with surgery, but he was cleared to take part in practices at the start of training camp. However, he didn't end up mixing into team drills at any point in August before the Cardinals placed him on injured reserve with a designation to return to begin the season. Though Conner has seemingly made progress in his recovery from the start of the season, the Cardinals are unlikely to rush him back into action with three other running backs (Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and Bam Knight) already on the 53-man roster. Gambardoro suggests that the Cardinals may be viewing Conner as more of an insurance policy in the backfield, and it's not out of the question for the veteran to get moved ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline if the team doesn't have a need for him once he's fully healthy.

Cardinals' James Conner: Moves to IR, designation to return
The Arizona Cardinals are placing James Conner (foot) on injured reserve with a designation to return, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix reports.Conner continues to deal with complications from the foot injury that ended his 2025 campaign Week 3 of last season. Initially, when Arizona didn't place him on the active/PUP list at the start of training camp, it was an indication that he had a chance to be available for Week 1. Instead, Conner will be required to miss at least the first four games following this transaction. Considering rookie third overall pick Jeremiyah Love's status is up in the air due to a high-ankle sprain, Tyler Allgeier may be the team's lead runner in the early going, with Bam Knight backing him up.

Cardinals' James Conner: Uncertain for Week 1
Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said Wednesday that it's "too early to tell" if James Conner (foot) will be ready for Week 1 against the Chargers, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.Conner avoided the PUP list at the start of training camp, but that was a month ago, and he still hasn't joined team drills at practice. With Jeremiyah Love (high ankle) also uncertain for the season opener and Trey Benson (knee) on injured reserve, Tyler Allgeier may be tasked with a large workload Week 1. Trade rumors involving Conner may also continue, but the more immediate concern is his slow return to football shape and uncertain availability for the early part of the regular season.

Cardinals' James Conner: DNP on Monday
James Conner (foot) didn't take part in Monday's practice, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.Conner hasn't played in any of the Arizona Cardinals' three preseason games so far and also hasn't been seen for the last handful of practices. He's dealing with lingering issues related to the foot surgery he underwent last fall and ended his season after Week 3. With Trey Benson (knee) getting waived/injured Monday, Conner is the top running back behind the duo of rookie third overall pick Jeremiyah Love (ankle) and Tyler Allgeier. Until Conner gets back on the field, though, Bam Knight is the team's likely No. 3 RB.

Cardinals' James Conner: Progressing, but no timeline for 11-on-11s
Head coach Mike LaFleur said Saturday that there is no timeline for James Conner (foot) to participate in 11-on-11 drills in training camp practice, Darren Urban of the Arizona Cardinals' official site reports.Conner continues to rehab from foot and ankle surgery that he underwent last September after suffering a severe injury in Week 3 against the 49ers. It seems unlikely that the veteran running back will play in either of the Cardinals' remaining preseason games, but he could be ready to suit up for the team's regular-season opener against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 13. Jeremiyah Love picked up an ankle injury during Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Raiders and is expected to be sidelined for this upcoming week, so Tyler Allgeier figures to serve as the Cardinals' top running back in practice ahead of Arizona's next preseason game against Dallas on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Cardinals' James Conner: Doesn't play vs. Las Vegas
James Conner (foot) did not play in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Raiders. It's not much of a surprise, considering Conner is still working his way back from foot and ankle surgery that he underwent in late September. Neither Conner nor Trey Benson played in Thursday's exhibition contest, though No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love (ankle) saw a fair amount of work against the Raiders, turning 14 touches into 72 yards, while Tyler Allgeier added four carries for 19 yards. Conner, Love and Allgeier figure to all be in the mix for backfield snaps, though who's listed as RB1 by the start of the regular season is up in the air.

Cardinals' James Conner: Not doing full-team drills
James Conner (foot) isn't yet doing full-team drills at training camp, Darren Urban of azcardinals.com reports.Coming back from season-ending foot surgery, Conner didn't do much during the offseason program but took part in the opening practices of training camp. Now that 11-on-11 drills are starting up, Conner has been forced to watch from the sideline while Tyler Allgeier and Jeremiyah Love take first-team reps. There will be concern for Conner's Week 1 availability if he doesn't begin full-team work within the next week or two.

Cardinals' James Conner: Advances past injuries
James Conner (foot/ankle) participated in practice Thursday, Jess Root of USA Today reports.Per Darren Urban of the Arizona Cardinals' official site, Conner has recovered fully from the ankle injury that limited him to three regular-season games in 2025, though it's possible he'll be eased back in as training camp rolls along. The 31-year-old returns to a crowded Arizona backfield that now includes first-rounder Jeremiyah Love and free-agent addition Tyler Allgeier, as well as 2024 third-rounder Trey Benson. With Love and Allgeier destined to see their share of touches, Conner doesn't appear to have a clear path to steady volume in 2026, though that could change if injuries hit.
