Jake Heaps was released Monday by the Seahawks, John Boyle of Seahawks.com reports.Heaps will get the boot in order for the Seahawks to make room for journeyman Austin Davis as their third quarterback. The 25-year-old will now look to earn a camp invite with another team and latch on in a backup role.

Jake Heaps is pushing pushing rookie Trevone Boykin for the backup spot behind Russell Wilson, the Seattle Times reports.According to Doug Baldwin, Heaps has been the most accurate passer in training camp. Boykin still has the edge, though, as the Seattle Seahawks like that his dual-threat style is similar to Wilson's. The team also has not ruled out signing a veteran after cuts start in the next couple weeks.

Jets sign backup QB Josh Johnson
The New York Jets have signed Josh Johnson after working him out Thursday. They released fellow backup quarterback Jake Heaps to create roster space. Johnson has played in 29 career games, but has not thrown a pass since 2011. He has completed 54 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
