J.C. Jackson: Released by New England
The Patriots announced Friday that J.C. Jackson (illness) is being released.Jackson was reacquainted with the Patriots less than a year ago via a trade from the Chargers, but he was scheduled for a cap hit of over $14 million for the 2024 campaign. New England didn't specify that Jackson, who ended the 2023 season on the NFI list, is being cut with an injury designation, which would indicate that he's now healthy. Jackson's quality of play hasn't been the same since recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon in 2022, but he's still likely to garner interest on the open market.

Patriots' J.C. Jackson: Returning to New England
The New England Patriots acquired J.C. Jackson and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick from the Chargers on Wednesday in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Jackson will be kicking off his second stint in New England, where he began his career as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He emerged as one of the game's top cornerbacks during his time with the Patriots, recording 25 interceptions in four seasons before bolting for Los Angeles in free agency following the 2021 campaign on a five-year, $82.5 million deal. He never appeared to be a good fit with the Chargers, however, as he missed extensive time with a ruptured patellar tendon in 2022 and struggled in coverage in the first two games of 2023 before being a healthy inactive the past two weeks. Since Jackson's deal contains no guaranteed money beyond this season, the Patriots won't take on much risk by bringing him aboard, and the return to a familiar scheme could help rejuvenate the 27-year-old. Jackson may even be a candidate to move into a starting role right away with rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez out indefinitely with a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder.

Chargers' J.C. Jackson: Bad outing in loss
J.C. Jackson did not record a tackle, but he did register three pass breakups and an interception in Sunday's 36-34 loss to the Dolphins.Jackson only played 44 defensive snaps, fewest among the Los Angeles Chargers' starting trio of corners. Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported Jackson had been removed from the game late in the fourth quarter and the assumption was that it was due to some sort of injury. Instead, it seems as if Jackson was effectively benched for Ja'Sir Taylor, although Wednesday's injury report could be telling. Jackson ruptured his patellar tendon back in Week 7 of 2022, and his performance in Week 1 certainly seemed like a player still working himself back into game shape. While he did record an interception, the veteran made a boneheaded play taking it out of the end zone, costing the Chargers nearly 20 yards in field position. Jackson also inexplicably caused a pass interference on the final play of the first half, needlessly giving away a free field goal on a ball that had zero chance of making it to the end zone. Jackson's massive contract will likely afford him more opportunities, but Week 1 was a difficult look for the former Pro Bowler.
