Brandon Mebane: Parts ways with Chargers

The Chargers released Brandon Mebane on Friday, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.Mebane, who contemplated retirement last offseason, has spent the last four seasons with Los Angeles. He notched 27 tackles and a sack across 13 regular-season games in 2019. If the 35-year-old opts to continue his career, he'll be immediately free to look for a shot as a rotational linebacker elsewhere in the league. Per Daniel Popper of The Athletic, Mebane's release frees up $4.25 against the salary cap for the Chargers.

Chargers' Brandon Mebane: Nearing end of his career

Brandon Mebane tallied 27 tackles (15 solo) and a sack over 13 games during the 2019 season. The end of the road appears to be looming for the 35-year-old. Mebane, who contemplated retirement last offseason only to return for his fourth season with the Los Angeles Chargers, missed three games in 2019 due to injury, and posted his lowest tackle figures since the 2016 season as a result. Relatively deep along the defensive line, the Chargers could very well choose not to retain Mebane should the veteran nose tackle opt to play in his 14th professional season.

Chargers' Brandon Mebane: One tackle in return

Brandon Mebane recorded one tackle in the team's Week 10 loss to the Raiders.Mebane had been battling a knee injury that held him out of action for three consecutive contests prior to Thursday's loss. He played 34 defensive snaps for the team in his return, roughly equaling his playing time prior to the injury. The Los Angeles Chargers remain somewhat shorthanded at defensive tackle with both Justin Jones (shoulder) and Cortez Broughton (illness) sidelined, meaning Mebane could play a bigger role going forward if their absences persist.

Chargers' Brandon Mebane: Sack in loss

Brandon Mebane recorded two tackles (one solo) and a sack across 31 defensive snaps in Sunday's loss to the Texans. The veteran nose tackle rarely records sacks these days, as this is just his third in his three-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. A run stuffer on the defensive line, Mebane doesn't offer much IDP value, especially considering he is only playing in about half of the team's defensive snaps this season.

Chargers' Brandon Mebane: Sticking in Los Angeles

Brandon Mebane re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday on a two-year contract, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. The money involved in the deal isn't known, but it's likely that the 34-year-old veteran agreed to a pay cut after receiving a three-year, $13.5 million deal from the Chargers the last time he was a free agent. A valuable leader in the locker room, Mebane should remain a prominent part of the Chargers' defensive-line rotation.
