James Jones: Announces retirement
James Jones announced his retirement Wednesday.Jones was released by the Chargers last August and never caught on with another team. He spent eight of his nine seasons in Green Bay, including a 2012 campaign in which he recorded 14 touchdowns on only 64 receptions. He never reached 900 receiving yards in a season, but his rapport with Aaron Rodgers in the red zone allowed him to score 51 times on 433 career catches (11.8 percent).

James Jones: Suggests he wants to play for Niners
James Jones said he wants to play in the Bay Area, SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.Released by San Diego on Monday, the 32-year-old Jones seems to know that the 49ers arguably have the weakest group of wide receivers in the NFL. He's from San Jose and went to college at San Jose State, making it a strong fit from a personal perspective. While borderline roster material for most teams, Jones could potentially serve as the No. 2 wideout if he were to sign with San Francisco. It's unclear if the Niners have any interest, as head coach Chip Kelly may prefer to evaluate younger players while rebuilding the team.

James Jones: Released by Chargers Monday
James Jones was released by the Chargers on Monday, Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union Tribune reports. The veteran receiver projected as the sixth wideout on the Chargers' depth chart, so he was in competition for a spot on the final roster. Jones is entering his 10th season in the league after spending all but one prior with the Packers. Isaiah Burse, DeAndre Reaves, and Dom Williams now figure to be competing for a spot on the final roster.

Chargers' James Jones: Plays into fourth quarter
James Jones caught two passes for 21 yards on three targets in Sunday's preseason game against the Vikings.Jones played into the fourth quarter, long after Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams had already been removed from the game. The San Diego Chargers wanted to add a veteran after Steve Johnson (knee) suffered a season-ending injury, but there's been nothing to suggest Jones will have a significant role in the offense. He'll likely be fighting for his roster spot in the final preseason game.

Chargers' James Jones: Solid in preseason win
James Jones recorded two catches for 21 yards in the San Diego Chargers preseason win over the Cardinals. The Chargers reacted quickly to the season-ending injury Stevie Johnson (knee) suffered during the first week of training camp, signing Jones to provide depth at the wide receiver position. While the 32-year-old likely won't earn a starting role now that both Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin appear healthy heading into the season, Jones has developed a bit of chemistry with starting QB Philip Rivers --- enough to warrant a roster spot with the team. The veteran probably won't see the field enough to put up consistent fantasy numbers as it stands now, but he could be a solid fantasy candidate if injuries affect the top of the depth chart.

James Jones: Signing with Chargers
James Jones will sign with the Chargers, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. With Stevie Johnson (torn meniscus) likely out for at least the first few weeks of the regular season, the Chargers brought in some veteran wideouts and ultimately settled on Jones. Though he did lead an injury-plagued Packers offense in receiving yards last year, the 32-year-old wideout previously appeared to be on the NFL fringe, having been cut by the Raiders and Giants prior to the season. Jones could compete with Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams to serve as San Diego's No. 3 wideout while Johnson is sidelined.

James Jones: Set to visit Chargers
James Jones and Brian Hartline will visit with the Chargers this week, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. With Stevie Johnson (torn meniscus) facing an extended absence, the Chargers are checking out a couple of veterans who could provide depth behind the starting duo of Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin. Despite leading the Packers in receiving yards last season, Jones will likely need to fight for a roster spot regardless of where he lands. Prior to rejoining the Packers, he was released by both the Raiders and Giants.

James Jones: Unlikely to be back in Green Bay
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that the team is not focused on re-signing James Jones, Weston Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports.Released by both the Raiders and Giants last year, Jones temporarily revived his career after landing back in Green Bay, posting a 50-890-8 receiving line in 16 games. He shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new home, but he'll likely have to prove that he's worthy of a roster spot when not playing with Aaron Rodgers. Soon to be 32 years old, Jones is unlikely to establish fantasy value outside of Green Bay. For their part, the Packers seem happy to move forward with Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis competing for playing time alongside Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson (knee).

Packers' James Jones: Reels in seven passes against Washington
James Jones hauled in seven of 11 targets for 81 yards in Sunday's win over Washington.Jones helped set up Green Bay's first touchdown of the game by nabbing a 34-yard strike down the seam. Jones came out of nowhere to score six touchdowns in the seasons' first six games, but scored just twice afterward. He still managed to lead the team in receiving yards and was the top target in Green Bay's Week 16 loss to their Division Round opponent, Arizona. During that game, Jones caught five of 11 targets for 46 yards.

Packers' James Jones: Tops 100 receiving yards
James Jones caught four passes for 102 yards on 13 targets in Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Vikings.Once again wearing his famous hoodie, Jones came up with a few big plays for an otherwise lifeless Green Bay offense. He still has trouble getting open, but the inefficient receiving line was largely due to poor throws by Aaron Rodgers, with some of those essentially being throw-aways. Jones often disappeared during the middle part of the season, but with seven or more targets and four or more catches in each of the final four games, he's been the closest thing the Green Bay Packers have to a reliable offensive weapon. He'll face a middling Washington secondary in the first round of the playoffs.
