Martellus Bennett: Won't be retained by New England
The Patriots informed Martellus Bennett on Wednesday that he would be released, Field Yates of ESPN reports.Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, the move frees up approximately $6 million in salary-cap space for the team in advance of free agency. Bennett, who turns 31 on March 10, began the 2017 campaign with Green Bay, hauling in 24 passes for 233 yards in seven games before being waived in November with a "Failure to Disclose Physical Condition" designation. The Patriots, with whom Bennett found success in 2016, subsequently claimed the tight end off waivers, but he caught just six passes in two outings before landing on injured reserve with rotator cuff and hamstring issues. Assuming he wants to play in 2018, Bennett should draw some interest if he proves to suitors that he's healthy. Moreover, if Rob Gronkowski is seriously pondering retirement, it's possible that Bennett could return to New England on a team-friendly deal.

Patriots' Martellus Bennett: Headed for IR
Martellus Bennett (shoulder/hamstring) will be placed on injured reserve, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.Bennett was released by the Packers in early November amid an alleged disagreement about how to deal with his shoulder injury. He seemingly wanted to have surgery, but then put it off once he was released and had the option of rejoining the New England Patriots. A subsequent hamstring injury will end Bennett's season after just two appearances in a New England uniform, and he'll presumably now have the surgery on his shoulder. He'll turn 31 in March and has already dropped hints that this could be his final season in the NFL. Dwayne Allen reclaims his role as the Patriots' No. 2 tight end.

Patriots' Martellus Bennett: Not in line to play Sunday
Martellus Bennett (shoulder/hamstring), who is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, won't play in the contest, a source informed Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Bennett's doubtful designation already made it more likely than not that he wouldn't suit up in Week 12, but Rapoport's report indicates that the veteran tight end hasn't made any unexpected progress since sitting out Friday's practice. With Bennett out of the mix, Dwayne Allen will be the clear top backup to Rob Gronkowski, but Allen is unlikely to be much of a factor in the passing game if Gronkowski makes it through the contest unscathed.
