Chargers' Michael Badgley: Could be team's kicker in Week 6

Badgley could handle kicking duties for the Chargers on Sunday against the Browns with Caleb Sturgis (quadriceps) considered unlikely to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

When he last spoke to the media Friday, coach Anthony Lynn told Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com that he had yet to decide if Badgley or Sturgis would kick for the Chargers in Week 6. Rapoport's report suggest that Badgley looks like the leading candidate to handle those duties for at least one game while Sturgis battles a strained quadriceps, but the Chargers will likely wait and see how Sturgis looks during pregame warmups before rendering a decision on that front. Badgley, an undrafted rookie out of Miami (Fla.), turned in an impressive preseason for the Colts before being cut. He connected on all five of his field-goal attempts -- including one from 51 yards out -- and was 5-for-5 on extra-point tries.

  • Chargers' Caleb Sturgis: Unlikely to play Week 6

Sturgis (quadriceps), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns, is considered unlikely to kick for the Chargers but will work out ahead of the contest, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Fortunately for those who are rostering Sturgis, the Chargers and Browns kick off at 1 p.m. EDT, giving fantasy owners time to pivot to a different kicker in the event Sturgis is ruled out. Even if the Chargers elect to keep both Sturgis and Michael Badgley active for the contest, it's uncertain that Sturgis would handle the team's kicking duties exclusively. It's probably best to avoid the situation altogether this week.

  • Marshall Koehn: Let go from Giants' practice squad

Koehn was released from the Giants' practice squad Friday, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.

Koehn signed to the practice squad earlier this week as a precaution with starter Aldrick Rosas dealing with a quad injury. Rosas was deemed healthy enough following Thursday's loss to the Eagles so as to make Koehn expendable.

  • Rams' Greg Zuerlein: Won't return Week 6

Zuerlein (groin) was officially ruled out of Sunday's game against the Broncos, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.

Zuerlein progressed to limited practice participation Thursday and Friday but was unsurprisingly ruled out as coach Sean McVay indicated earlier in the week he was still a week away from returning. Cairo Santos will serve as the Rams' kicker with a nice matchup in the altitude at Denver.

  • Jake Elliott K | PHI

Eagles' Jake Elliott: Misses again from long distance

Eliott made two of three field-goal attempts in Thursday's 34-13 win over the Giants. He was perfect on four extra points.

Elliott nailed his first field-goal try from 33 yards with under two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Philadelphia would get the ball back with 23 seconds remaining in the period and gave the Memphis product a 54-yard chance to close out the half, but he pushed it wide right. The 23-year-old was good again from 30 yards early in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles a three-touchdown lead. Through six games, Elliott still has not made a kick longer than 40 yards, but that's over a small sample of just three attempts.

  • Chargers' Caleb Sturgis: Listed as questionable this week

Sturgis (quad) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns, Ricky Henne of the Chargers' official site reports.

In the event that he's unable to kick in Week 6, the team also has Michael Badgley on hand. Either way, those hoping to use a Chargers kicker this weekend will gain clarity on the situation in advance of the first wave of games Sunday, with the Chargers-Browns game kicking off at 1:00 ET.

  • Rams' Greg Zuerlein: Puts in limited practice

Zuerlein (groin) was listed as a limited participant at Thursday's practice, Rich Hammond of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

Zuerlein had been labeled a non-participant at Wednesday's practice, with coach Sean McVay stating the same day that the kicker is probably another week away from playing. While McVay's comment likely still holds true, Zuerlein's advancement to limited participation tentatively keeps a sliver of hope alive for him to return to action Sunday against the Broncos. If Zuerlein is forced to miss a fourth straight contest with the groin injury, Cairo Santos would serve as the Rams' kicker.

Chargers' Michael Badgley: Viewed as 'security blanket'

Coach Anthony Lynn said that Badgley will act as a "security blanket" for the Chargers in the event Sturgis is unable to serve as the team's kicker Sunday against the Browns.

The Chargers' decision to sign Badgley to their 53-man roster rather than their practice squad seemed to hint that Sturgis was trending toward sitting out Week 6, but Lynn's comments appear to refute that notion, at least for now. It's clear nonetheless that Sturgis isn't fully healthy, and if the groin issue continues to hinder him heading into the weekend, the Chargers likely won't hesitate to turn to Badgley. The undrafted rookie out of Miami (Fla.) previously attended training camp with the Colts, but was unable to unseat Adam Vinatieri for the kicking job.

  • Chargers' Caleb Sturgis: New kicker viewed as 'security blanket'

Coach Anthony Lynn indicated Thursday that he's hopeful Sturgis will be available Sunday against the Browns, but newly signed kicker Michael Badgley will be on hand as a "security blanket."

Sturgis was a limited participant in the Chargers' first practice of the week Wednesday due to the groin strain, but it appears the injury isn't severe enough for the team to rule him out for the Week 6 matchup. Even so, the Chargers' decision to add Badgley to the 53-man roster rather than stashing him on their practice squad suggests a fair bit of skepticism surrounding Sturgis' health. Fantasy owners planning on using Sturgis in weekly matchups should still have a backup plan in mind if the groin injury prevents him from kicking come Sunday.

    Chargers' Michael Badgley: Joining Chargers

The Chargers will sign Badgley to a contract Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The roster move comes after kicker Caleb Sturgis was limited in Wednesday's practice with a strained quadriceps. The Chargers likely wouldn't have added Badgley to the roster if they were comfortable with Sturgis' health heading into Sunday's matchup with the Browns, so it's expected that Badgley will serve as the kicker for that contest. Schefter notes, however, that Sturgis won't be cut or moved to injured reserve as a result of the setback, suggesting Badgley will likely only be in store for a short-term run as the Chargers' kicker.
