  • Texans' Ka'imi Fairbairn: Remains sidelined

Fairbairn (undisclosed) continues to be sidelined due to a soft-tissue injury, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Fairbairn missed Saturday's preseason game against the 49ers with the injury, and coach Bill O'Brien was unable to offer a timetable for his return. Nick Rose is filling in for the Texans and made his lone field-goal attempt from 32 yards Saturday, although he did miss an extra-point try.

  • Jason Myers K | SEA

    Jason Myers: Cut by Seattle

Myers was released by the Seahawks on Monday.

Myers drew the tough task of trying to beat out veteran kicker Sebastian Janikowski for the starting duties and ultimately fell short. There's no denying Myers' ability, but whether he'll get another shot at a starting job this year could be out of his control.

  • Vikings' Daniel Carlson: Wins kicking job

Carlson has won the Vikings' kicker job, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The team released Kai Forbath on Monday, ending the competition halfway through the preseason. Carlson's status as a fifth-round pick made him the favorite all along, and Forbath probably lost his chance when the rookie nailed a 57-yard field goal and four extra-point attempts in the first week of the preseason. Given the overall strength of his team, Carlson is worth considering as a borderline top-10 kicker. The Vikings tied for eighth in field-goal attempts (38) and ninth in extra-point attempts (39) last season.

  • Chargers' Caleb Sturgis: Struggling in kicking battle

Sturgis appears to be losing the competition for the Chargers' kicker role, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The Chargers have had Sturgis and former second-round pick Roberto Aguayo competing for the regular season job. Sturgis was the favorite coming into camp but it appears he's fallen behind and now faces an uphill battle to make the roster.

  • Raiders' Eddy Pineiro: Dealing with injured groin

Pineiro did not travel to Saturday's preseason loss to the Rams due to a groin injury, Omar Ruiz of the NFL Network reports.

Pineiro was unable to play Saturday after tweaking his groin during Wednesday's practice, while additional updates regarding his status should become available within the next couple days. The rookie had an upper leg on the kicking competition over Mike Nugent prior to his injury, but the latter connected on his lone field-goal attempt from 31 yards Saturday.

  • Rams' Greg Zuerlein: Connects on two of three attempts Saturday

Zuerlein connected on two of three field-goal attempts and made his lone PAT in Saturday's 19-15 preseason win over the Raiders.

Zuerlein missed wide-right from 48 yards out late in the first quarter, but he rebounded with second-quarter makes of 42 and 28 yards. With last December's back surgery completely behind him, Zuerlein looks poised to assume kicking duties for one of the league's most explosive offenses. Sam Ficken worked the second half and converted a pair of short field goals, but he's little more than an insurance option.

  • Vikings' Daniel Carlson: Converts lone extra point versus Jags

Carlson converted his only extra point opportunity and did not attempt a field goal during Saturday's 14-10 preseason loss to the Jaguars.

The most important development for Carlson didn't even come off his own foot, as veteran Kai Forbath clanked a 41-yard field goal attempt off the upright in the second quarter. The rookie didn't receive many opportunities to generate points, but he could get the first crack at field-goal opportunities next week against the Seahawks. The kickers are locked in a position battle, and Carlson could have his opportunity to inch ahead after Saturday's developments.

  • Matt Bryant K | ATL

Falcons' Matt Bryant: Sitting out preseason game

Bryant (undisclosed) will not play in Friday's preseason game against the Chiefs.

Bryant has no reason to rush back into action, so it's not surprising he will take the week off as he continues to recover from the undisclosed issue. The veteran placekicker is nearing a return, but it's David Marvin who should handle the duties against the Chiefs.

  • Matt Bryant K | ATL

    Falcons' Matt Bryant: Game-day decision

Bryant (undisclosed) will be a game-day decision for Friday's contest against Kansas City, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Bryant didn't play in last week's preseason opener against the Jets due to his ailment, but he did kick a few balls in practice Wednesday. David Marvin slotted in during Bryant's absence last week and figures to handle kicking duties once again if the latter is unable to go on Friday.

  • Cairo Santos K | CHI

Jets' Cairo Santos: Not expected to play Thursday

Santos (groin) is not expected to play in Thursday's preseason game against the Redskins, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Santos scaled back his participation in practice this week after an ongoing groin issue resurfaced, so it's not surprising to see him being held out of Thursday's outing. Santos remains the favorite to be the Jets' starting kicker, but rookie Taylor Bertolet will take over placekicking duties in his absence.
