Panthers' Graham Gano: Will serve as Week 1 kicker

Head coach Ron Rivera confirmed Friday that Gano will be the Panthers' kicker in Sunday's matchup with the 49ers, Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

The Panthers will open the regular season with two kickers on the active roster, and the team has debated releasing either Gano or fellow kicker Harrison Butker. However, they will hang onto both players for now, and it will be Gano who gets the opportunity to kick in Week 1. Butker is still a threat to Gano's roster spot long term, but it seems likely he will be inactive for Week 1 so the Panthers can assign a spot on the 46-man roster elsewhere.

  • Jason Myers K | SEA

Jaguars' Jason Myers: Overcomes early preseason misses

Myers made field goals of 44, 56 and 36 yards without a miss over the final two preseason games, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports.

Myers overcame some early failures during the preseason, missing three field goals and an extra point in the first two preseason games. That led the Jaguars to bring in some competition, but Myers improved over the final two preseason games. The early problems could be related to losing long snapper Carson Tinker to a season-ending ACL injury. After adjusting to a new long snapper, Matt Overton, Myers didn't miss a kick.

  • Nick Folk K | NYJ

Buccaneers' Nick Folk: Not playing Week 1 due to postponement

Folk won't suit up in Week 1 after the Buccaneers' matchup with the Dolphins was postponed with Hurricane Irma expected to make landfall in South Florida, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

The two teams are scheduled to make up the contest Nov. 19 in Week 11 of the regular season, meaning both the Buccaneers and Dolphins will play 16 consecutive weeks to conclude the campaign. Folk, who won the kicking job in the preseason over incumbent Roberto Aguayo, is slated to make his season debut Sept. 17 against the Bears.

  • Jake Elliott K | PHI

Jake Elliott: Still on practice squad

Elliott passed through waivers and joined the Bengals' practice squad, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons was quick to assert that Randy Bullock's job is safe, even with Elliott on the practice squad. However, it's worth noting that sentiment usually lasts until the first big miss by the incumbent kicker. Therefore, Elliott could still see action this year.

  • Andrew Franks: Gives way to Parkey

Franks was let go by the Dolphins after Cody Parkey was claimed on waivers by the team, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

The 24-year-old made 16 of 21 field goal attempts for the Dolphins last season, en route to logging 89 points in 16 games. He'll now find himself as part of a pool of free agent kickers looking for jobs after this weekend's roster churn.

  • Panthers' Harrison Butker: Still battling for kicking duties

Butker survived Saturday's roster cuts but is still battling for the starting kicker job, Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Butker seems like he's neck-and-neck with Graham Gano at the moment. There's a chance the team will take both kickers with them when they travel across the country to San Francisco for Week 1, but that seems somewhat unlikely. Carolina opted to go with youth over experience at punter, so who's to say they won't do the same at kicker? As for now, we'll have to wait and see.

  • Graham Gano K | NYG

Panthers' Graham Gano: In line to kick in Week 1 if two kickers remain

Interim GM Marty Hurney relayed that he doesn't know how long the Panthers will keep two kickers, but did note that if the team has two for this coming Sunday's season opener at San Francisco, Gano will kick, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.

For now, both Gano and rookie Harrison Butker are on the Panthers' roster, but it looks like the team is trying to whittle that down to one. Those eyeing either Carolina kicker in Week 1 lineups should monitor the situation closely, while those in season-long formats will probably want to hold off on a heavy investment in the team's kicking game until a final determination is made.

  • Dolphins' Andrew Franks: Faces competition from Cody Parkey

Franks now has competition for the Dolphins' kicking job, with Cody Parkey having been claimed on waivers by the team, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

Unsettled kicker situations are best avoided at this time of the year, but the mere fact that Franks now faces a challenge from an experienced NFL kicker such as Parkey suggests that his roster spot is hardly secure.

  • Graham Gano K | NYG

Panthers' Graham Gano: Kicking competition not settled

Gano and rookie Harrison Butker both remain on the Panthers' roster for the time being, the Charlotte Observer reports.

It's unlikely that the Panthers will keep both kickers, unless the team has designs on making one a kickoff specialist. Per the team's official site, that doesn't appear to be the case, so look for the Panthers to see if there's any trade interest in either kicker prior to sending one packing.

  • Travis Coons K | LAR

    Travis Coons: Waived by Rams

Coons was waived by the Rams on Saturday, Jamie Han of the Rams' official site reports.

Unsurprisingly, Coons lost out on the starting job to veteran Greg Zuerlein.
