  • Devils' Travis Zajac: Announces retirement
    By RotoWire

Zajac will retire as a New Jersey Devil after signing a one-day contract with the club Monday. Zajac spent 15 years playing for the Devils before being traded to the Islanders at the deadline this past season. Selected by New Jersey with the 20th overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, the 36-year-old center racked up 203 goals and 349 assists in 1,037 NHL games plus another 30 points in 71 playoff contests.

  • Zajac scored a goal on his only shot and had three hits in Wednesday's 6-2 win over Boston in Game 6. The 36-year-old finally netted his first goal of the playoffs, cleaning up a rebound in front to break a scoreless tie midway through the opening period. Zajac has two points and a plus-4 rating in seven postseason games.

Zajac will suit up in Wednesday's Game 6 against Pittsburgh, Brian Compton of NHL.com reports. Zajac was a healthy scratch through the first five games of the series, but he'll replace Oliver Wahlstrom, who's dealing with an undisclosed injury and can't play. Zajac has seen action in 57 playoff games in his career, recording 11 goals and 28 points over that span. The 36-year-old will add a veteran presence to the third line Wednesday.

  • Zajac could enter the lineup Wednesday versus the Penguins, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. He's been a healthy scratch for all five games of the series so far. Zajac would take the place of Oliver Wahlstrom (undisclosed) should he be forced to miss the game. Coach Barry Trotz may feel the veteran Zajac is the safe play, as he has plenty of experience versus the Penguins, but Zajac also only has one goal and one assist for the Islanders since being acquired at the trade deadline.

  • Zajac has yet to dress for any of the playoff games versus the Penguins. Zajac was acquired along with Kyle Palmieri at the trade deadline, but he was always considered a spare part, as the Islanders are already deep down the middle with Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Casey Cizikas. Coach Barry Trotz tried to insert Zajac at wing on several lines, but when that didn't work, there really wasn't a spot for him in a healthy Islanders lineup. As a result, Zajac continues to be insurance for the Islanders.
