Hjalmarsson has signed a contract with HV 71 of the Swedish Hockey League, according to TSN's Chris Johnston. Hjalmarsson last played in the NHL during the 2020-21 season, picking up five assists in 41 games for Arizona. He sat out last season, but at the age of 35, the defenseman wanted to finish out his career in his native Sweden.

Hjalmarsson is expected to retire from the NHL after 14 seasons, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports. The 34-year-old blueliner appeared in 41 games with Arizona last season, tallying five assists and a minus-6 rating while averaging 17:22 of ice time. Hjalmarsson spent 10 seasons with the Blackhawks and was a key defenseman on three championship teams during his time there. He finishes his NHL career with 25 goals, 172 points and 1,605 blocked shots while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time across 821 games. The 6-foot-3 Swede also tallied 29 points in 137 career postseason appearances.

Hjalmarsson produced an assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Sharks. HJalmarsson set up Johan Larsson for a goal in the second period. The 33-year-old Hjalmarsson is up to five assists through 37 games this year. A stay-at-home defenseman, he's added 64 blocked shots, 18 PIM and a minus-4 rating in a bottom-four role for the Coyotes in 2020-21.

The 33-year-old defenseman will likely remain more of a defensive presence than a scoring threat. He has four helpers, 46 blocks, 21 shots on net and a minus-4 rating in 30 appearances this season.

Hjalmarsson (upper body) was activated from injured reserve and will suit up for Monday's game against Colorado, Alexander Kinkopf of the Coyotes' official website reports. Hjalmarsson will return from a 10-game absence Monday. The 33-year-old defenseman has four assists and 44 blocked shots through 29 games this season.
