Subban will call it a career and end his playing career, he announced on social media Tuesday. Subban spent 13 seasons and 834 games playing in the NHL for Montreal, Nashville and New Jersey. The blueliner won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman back in 2012-13 but had limited postseason success, appearing in one Stanley Cup Finals back in 2016-17 with the Predators. Still, during his heyday, Subban was one of the most offensively gifted defensemen in the league, having reached the 50-point threshold three times in his career.

Subban scored five goals and added 17 assists in 77 appearances during the 2021-22 season. Subban got back over the 20-point threshold after narrowly missing it in each of the previous two seasons, but his offensive capabilities have diminished significantly since Subban's prime years, when he was a consistent 50-point threat. The 32-year-old defenseman will be an unrestricted free agent now that his behemoth of an eight-year, $72 million contract has expired. His toughness and veteran experience should allow Subban to find a landing spot, but he's unlikely to be a fantasy difference-maker in most formats regardless of where he signs.

Subban (illness) will return to action Friday versus Detroit. Subban will likely return to a bottom-four role following his two-game absence. The 32-year-old vet has notched 17 points through 76 contests this season.

Subban (illness) remains out of the lineup Thursday versus the Hurricanes, Devils team reporter Catherine Bogart reports. Subban will miss his second straight game with the flu, and it's unclear if he'll be healthy enough to go Friday versus the Red Wings in the season finale.

Subban (illness) will not play Tuesday against the Senators, per the NHL's media site. Subban missed Monday's practice and will now miss at least one game while dealing with an illness. New Jersey's next game is Thursday against the Hurricanes. The veteran blueliner has just one point over his last 16 appearances.
