Devils' Jake Allen: Gets starting nod Thursday
Allen will be between the home pipes against the Flyers on Thursday, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Allen will have the benefit of facing a Philadelphia squad that is on the second night of a back-to-back, though it will be motivated to bounce back from a 7-0 rout at the hands of the Penguins. For his part, Allen went 17-17-2 with a 2.74 GAA and one shutout in 37 regular-season games last year. If he can stay healthy, the veteran backstop should be capable of reaching the 20-win mark for the first time since 2017-18 when he was with St. Louis.

Devils' Connor Brown: Dealing with injury
Brown (undisclosed) is expected to miss at least the first two games of the 2026-27 campaign, Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News reports Wednesday.
Brown sustained the injury during Monday's practice. Head coach Sheldon Keefe clarified that he doesn't believe Brown's injury is "too extensive," but the 32-year-old forward won't be ready until next week at the earliest. That rules him out for Thursday's season opener versus Philadelphia and Saturday's road game against the Islanders. Brown will likely play in a middle-six capacity once he's healthy.

Devils' Johnny Kovacevic: Appears on injured non-roster list
Kovacevic (knee) will begin the 2026-27 regular season on the injured non-roster list, per Mike Morreale of NHL.com.
Kovacevic was a limited participant across the majority of New Jersey's training camp and didn't appear in a preseason game. The 29-year-old blueliner battled through injuries early in the 2025-26 regular season as well, where he posted eight points, 30 shots on net, 57 hits and 39 blocked shots across 34 games. When he's available to return, he'll likely begin the season as the team's sixth or seventh defenseman, as he and Declan Chisholm are the team's current candidates to claim the right-defenseman role on New Jersey's third pairing.

Devils' Nick Bjugstad: Starting on injured non-roster
Bjugstad (pectoral) will begin the 2026-27 regular season on the injured non-roster list, per Mike Morreale of NHL.com.
Bjugstad underwent surgery earlier in September to repair the torn left pectoral muscle he suffered while training in the offseason. The 34-year-old forward had a quiet 2025-26 campaign, where he posted six goals, nine points, 77 shots on net, 108 hits and 33 blocked shots across 61 regular-season games between St. Louis and New Jersey. He would've potentially had a similar role with New Jersey if he was healthy for Opening Night. His expected timeline for return is 4-6 months, which places him off the fantasy radar until the second half of the upcoming season.

Devils' Seamus Casey: Shifts to IR-NR
Casey (knee) was placed on non-roster injured reserve Monday, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Casey was hurt in Thursday's preseason game versus the Rangers, and head coach Sheldon Keefe said afterward that Casey will miss some time. There hasn't been further clarification on the extent of the defenseman's injury, so the length of his absence won't be known until the Devils provide another update on Casey's status.

Devils' David Rittich: Appears on waivers
Rittich was placed on waivers by New Jersey on Sunday.
Out of the six players sent to the waiver wire by New Jersey on Sunday, Rittich was by far the biggest shock. The 34-year-old netminder was signed to a one-year, $1 million contract on the second day of free agency and entered training camp as the projected No. 2 option for the upcoming campaign. He was a strong backup with the Islanders in 2025-26, where he posted a 14-10-3 record, a 2.76 GAA and an .894 save percentage across 30 regular-season outings. As things currently stand, New Jersey currently has three goalies on their active roster - Jake Allen, Nico Daws and the newly-acquired Remi Poirier off waivers. It remains to be seen whether Rittich was placed on waivers as an act of roster gymnastics by New Jersey to scoop up Poirier, or if the team views the veteran as the No. 4 option in the organization. Regardless, there is a non-zero chance that Rittich is claimed off the wire, making the next 24 hours intriguing for the veteran netminder's future.

Devils' Topias Vilen: Sent to waivers
Vilen was placed on waivers by New Jersey on Sunday.
Vilen will head to the waiver wire Sunday with New Jersey's intention to have him return to AHL Utica. Across 61 regular-season outings with the Comets in 2025-26, the 23-year-old blueliner posted 23 assists and 27 points. While he likely won't play more than a handful of games for New Jersey in the 2026-27 season, he should have ample opportunities to develop in the AHL.

Kolyachonok secured a one-year deal with New Jersey when free agency opened after he spent time between the Stars and Bruins in 2025-26. The 25-year-old blueliner posted a goal, two assists, a plus-two rating, 12 shots on net, five hits and 13 blocked shots across 13 regular-season appearances between Dallas and Boston. White signed a one-year, two-way deal in late July after spending the 2025-26 campaign as the alternate captain for AHL San Jose. Across 46 regular-season outings for the Barracuda, the 29-year-old forward was efficient with 21 goals, 27 assists and 48 points. As long as he goes unclaimed, White will open the season with AHL Utica, but he could find his way back to the NHL if New Jersey suffers a handful of injuries to its forward core.

Tufte secured a one-year contract with New Jersey in the offseason after he spent the 2025-26 campaign in Boston's organization. He scored a goal across four games with Boston and was also effective with AHL Providence, where he posted 32 goals and 56 points across 64 regular-season outings. If he goes unclaimed over the next 24 hours, he'll open the 2026-27 campaign likely to play a large role for AHL Utica. Given that he was one of the last depth forwards on New Jersey's roster ahead of Sunday, he'll likely be one of the first names up from the minors if the team runs into injury trouble.

McLaughlin re-upped with New Jersey in the offseason, where he signed a one-year, two-way deal to stay with the organization. Devils' Remi Poirier: Claimed by New Jersey
Poirier was claimed off waivers by New Jersey on Sunday, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
With Dallas releasing Poirier on Saturday, New Jersey took notice and scooped him up to add to their organization depth. However, the team also opted to make room for him on the active roster by placing David Rittich on waivers. Because of this, the 24-year-old Poirier has a chance to open the season on New Jersey's Opening Night roster if Rittich is claimed off waivers by a different organization and if they favor the young netminder over Nico Daws. Poirier posted strong numbers with AHL Texas in 2025-26, where he compiled a 27-19-8 record, a 2.61 GAA and a .912 save percentage across 52 regular-season outings.

Devils' Jake Allen: Beaten once in preseason win
Allen stopped 14 of 15 shots in Saturday's 4-1 preseason win over the Islanders.
Allen carried a shutout deep into the third period after New Jersey built a 4-0 advantage through 40 minutes, but the Islanders scored their lone goal via Simon Holmstrom with only 4:39 remaining. Devils' Luke Evangelista: Scores twice in preseason win
Evangelista scored two goals in Saturday's 4-1 preseason win over the Islanders.
Evangelista opened the scoring on the power play at 6:13 of the first period, converting from the slot off a feed from Jack Hughes. He struck again just 19 seconds after Arseny Gritsyuk made it 2-0 early in the second, cleaning up a rebound at the right post to extend New Jersey's lead to three. Evangelista worked alongside Timo Meier and Nico Hischier at even strength while also occupying a spot on the Devils' top power-play unit, making his two-goal showing an encouraging conclusion to his first preseason with New Jersey. He figures to open the 2026-27 season on the first line after a 2025-26 campaign in which he posted 56 points (12 goals, 44 assists) with the Predators before an offseason trade sent him to New Jersey.

Devils' Nico Daws: Takes shootout loss
Daws allowed three goals on 23 shots in Thursday's 4-3 preseason shootout loss to the Rangers.
Daws went the distance in his first art of the preseason. The 25-year-old squandered a 2-0 lead in the third period and gave up the lone tally in the shootout. It's unclear if he'll get another audition this preseason -- the Devils play the Islanders on Saturday. Daws entered camp competing with David Rittich for the backup job, but the former didn't make a great impression in Thursday's contest. If the Devils don't want to carry three goalies, Daws will need to clear waivers to join AHL Utica.

Devils' Seamus Casey: Will miss time
Casey sustained an apparent knee injury Thursday versus the Rangers, and he will miss some time pending further evaluation, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Casey battled injuries in the AHL last year, and he didn't play after January, ending 2025-26 with 19 points in 29 appearances for Utica. He was going to have a tough time making the NHL roster to begin with, and this injury won't help. If it lingers into the regular season, Casey will likely start the year on non-roster injured reserve.

Daws rejoined the Devils on a two-year, $2.2 million contract in July, and he's slated to make his preseason debut and play the full game during New Jersey's penultimate exhibition matchup. The 25-year-old has made just nine regular-season appearances for the Devils across the past two years, going 5-2-0 with a 2.02 GAA and .925 save percentage. The Devils traded Jacob Markstrom to Florida during the offseason, so Daws could compete with Jake Allen and David Rittich if he makes a strong impression during Thursday's start.

Devils' Jack Hughes: Scores goal in preseason debut
Hughes potted an even-strength goal on four shots and went plus-1 in 18:20 of ice time in Monday's 3-2 preseason win over the Rangers.
Hughes has played in no more than 62 regular-season games in each of the last three years, though he finished with exactly 27 goals and at least 70 points during those campaigns. The 25-year-old has the talent to be a 100-point player -- he had 99 points across 78 regular-season games in 2022-23 -- but staying healthy has been a problem for Hughes so far in his career. While that's always a concern for fantasy managers, there's no denying the 2019 No. 1 overall pick is a high-end fantasy asset when he's in the lineup.
