  • Jason Spezza: Retires after 19 NHL seasons
    By RotoWire

Spezza announced his retirement Sunday after playing 19 seasons with Ottawa, Dallas, and Toronto. Spezza finishes a storied NHL tenure with 363 goals and 632 assists in 1,248 games. The five-time All-Star played the past three seasons with the Maple Leafs after spending four years with the Stars and the previous 11 with the Senators. Spezza, a Toronto native, will remain with the Leafs in a front-office role.

  • Spezza skated on the fourth line at practice Friday and could be entering the lineup in place of Wayne Simmonds for Game 3, reports Mark Masters of TSN. Spezza spent a load of time at practice Thursday on his own, practicing one-timers from the right circle. The Leafs could use a boost on their power play and a quieter, more strategic approach to the fourth line -- Simmonds got caught in too many scrums in Game 2.

  • Spezza has been a healthy scratch four times in the Leafs' last seven games. The grizzled veteran is a strong leader, but a nominal contributor for fantasy. Spezza has 10 goals and 11 assists in 64 games this season, and is nine points from the vaunted 1,000-point mark in his career. He will not achieve that height this season and will be a free agent this summer. Spezza's career is winding down and he is working year-to-year on league-minimum deals, so it remains to be seen what 2022-23 will bring.

  • Spezza notched an assist in Monday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jackets. Spezza set up Alex Kerfoot for a goal at 4:19 of the third period, restoring the Maple Leafs' lead after a push from the Blue Jackets. The helper snapped Spezza's five-game point drought. The 38-year-old forward has 20 points, 69 shots on net, a minus-2 rating and 20 PIM through 52 contests overall.

  • Spezza recorded an assist and two PIM in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Canadiens. Spezza set up Pierre Engvall's third-period marker. It's been seven games since Spezza scored a goal, but he has three assists in that span. The 38-year-old forward is up to 18 points, 63 shots on net, 18 PIM and a minus-3 rating through 45 contests, mainly playing in a fourth-line role.
