  • The Golden Knights traded Weber's (ankle) contract and a 2023 fifth-round pick to the Coyotes in exchange for Dysin Mayo on Wednesday, Kevin Weekes of ESPN reports. Weber's essentially retired, so the Coyotes will take on the burden of the three seasons remaining on his 14-year, $110 million contract in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft, albeit while losing Mayo in the process.

  • Weber (ankle) was traded from the Canadiens to the Golden Knights on Thursday in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov. This is more of a business move than a hockey move, as it's unlikely Weber will play again. The Golden Knights will stash Weber on long-term injured reserve, Jesse Granger of The Athletic reports. The defenseman has four years left on his contract.

  • Canadiens' Shea Weber: Career may be over
    By RotoWire

Weber (ankle) is expected to miss the upcoming season and has likely played his last NHL game. General manager Marc Bergevin told reporters, "Even missing a practice for him wasn't an option. He has a lot of mileage...he won't be back next season, and probably won't be back for his career," Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports. If Weber is in fact unable to continue playing, then he figures to spend the next five seasons on long-term injured reserve for the Canadiens. This would give the club the ability to exceed the cap by $7.8 million annually unless it opts to trade Weber's contract to another team. If this does mark the end of the four-time All-Star's NHL career, he will retire having appeared in 1038 games for Nashville and Montreal in which he racked up 224 goals and 365 assists, including 239 power-play points.

  • Weber, who played through a thumb injury in the playoffs, may miss the entirety of the upcoming season due to lingering foot and ankle issues, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Weber has often played through injuries during his career, but that appears to be catching up with him at 35 years old. Per Friedman, the lingering injury is in Weber's left foot or ankle, where he had surgery to repair torn tendons in March of 2018. The Canadiens, in coordination with the league and the NHLPA, are evaluating what his long-term future will look like. With doubts about his health ahead of 2021-22, the captain could be left unprotected ahead of next Wednesday's Seattle expansion draft to allow the Canadiens to protect a healthier player.

  • Weber played through a thumb injury during the playoffs, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports. Interim head coach Dominique Ducharme didn't elaborate on Weber's injury much in his comments after Wednesday's Game 5 loss. Weber managed a goal and five helpers in 22 playoff contests. The defenseman added 72 hits, 40 blocked shots and a plus-4 rating while skating on the top pairing.
