Patrick Dwyer: Playing career officially over
Patrick Dwyer has been hired as an assistant coach for AHL Charlotte.Dwyer spent the entirety of his seven-year NHL career with Carolina, so it makes sense for him to return to the organization as a coach now that he's officially hung up his skates after playing overseas for two seasons. The 2002 fourth-round pick will retire having totaled 42 goals and 93 points in 416 career NHL appearances.

Patrick Dwyer: Released from tryout
Patrick Dwyer has been cut by the Blue Jackets on Thursday, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.Dwyer could be facing a choice between retirement and a return to the Swedish League after failing to secure a permanent spot on the depth chart with Columbus. The 33-year-old has 42 goals and 51 assists in 416 career NHL games, all with the Carolina Hurricanes. Even if he can find a new team, the veteran is unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy value given he would likely be a fourth line player or healthy scratch most nights.

Blue Jackets' Patrick Dwyer: Earns PTO
Patrick Dwyer signed a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday.Including Dwyer, who played in the Swedish Hockey League last season, Columbus added six players to the training camp roster Wednesday. The Western Michigan University product has seven years of NHL experience with the Hurricanes. In the event that he breaks camp with the Jackets, Dwyer should boost a penalty kill that ranked 18th in the league last year.

Canes' Dwyer Nabs Goal
Dwyer found the back of the net for the fifth time this season in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Sabres. As the low goal total would suggest, Dwyer doesn't have much offensive upside to speak of while holding down a bottom-six role for the Hurricanes. His contributions in other categories (minus-13 rating, 10 PIM, 141 hits) simply aren't gaudy enough to prop him up either, making a relatively easy to dismiss from a fantasy perspective.

Canes' Dwyer Seeing Limited Ice Time
Dwyer is averaging just 13:03 per game this season, down from a career-high of 15:26 back in 2012-13.Dwyer is seeing limited minutes this season playing on the Canes' fourth line with Jay McClement and Brad Malone. Accordingly, he has just 10 points through 56 games thus far, putting him roughly on track to match the lowest offensive output of his career (12 points). Needless to say, Dwyer holds fantasy value in deeper formats only.

Canes' Dwyer Comes Up With Rare Point
Dwyer picked up a secondary assist in Monday's 6-3 win over the Senators. The helper is not likely to change Dwyer's status as a bottom-six forward. He has four goals and six assists in 49 games.

Sudden Scoring Surge For Canes' Dwyer
Dwyer registered his third point in four games with an assist in Monday's 4-1 win over Toronto.Sadly, Dwyer's current scoring surge only brings him to eight points on the season, and is not likely to be sustained given his fourth-line status. The points are nice to see, but Dwyer still holds little to no fantasy value outside of very deep formats.

Canes' Dwyer Scores In Win
Dwyer potted his third goal of the season in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Bruins.Dwyer has struggled mightily this year with just five points, but he was able to get on the scoresheet for the first time in four games and score his first goal since November. The 31-year-old doesn't have much value for fantasy purposes and isn't on track to surpass last season's total of 22 points.

Canes' Dwyer Struggling To Add Offense
Dwyer was held off the scoresheet for the fifth consecutive game Monday against the Devils. He has just two goals and no assists through 21 games so far this season. After scoring a career-high 22 points last season, Dwyer will be lucky to hit double-digits this year at the rate he's going. Anyone who drafted him as a sleeper pick in deeper formats has to be disappointed with his output so far. Feel free to bench him (or drop him altogether) and scout your waiver wire for more viable alternatives.

Hurricanes' Dwyer Bags First Goal
Dwyer scored his first goal of the season in Tuesday's win over the Stars.Dwyer missed much of October with a groin concern, but he's been a regular player for the Hurricanes since returning to action Nov. 1. Unfortunately, because he remains confined to a bottom-six role, he hasn't had much of an opportunity to produce on the offensive end. He's averaging less than a shot per game in his 12 contests.
