Ryan Malone -- who was in camp on a professional tryout -- was cut by the Wild on Friday.Malone wasn't actually lobbying for an NHL deal, but instead, hoping to use the tryout as a springboard to an AHL-only contract. With just a minor-league deal, the veteran would be eligible to play in the 2018 Winter Olympics, which has been his stated goal all along.

Wild's Ryan Malone: Will attend Minnesota's training camp
Ryan Malone will join the Minnesota Wild at training camp on a professional tryout agreement.Malone was expected to retire from professional hockey when he was placed on unconditional waivers by the Rangers in February 2015, but he's evidently had a recent change of heart. The 37-year-old winger hasn't suited up for an NHL club since he failed to tally a point in six games with New York in 2014-15, so fantasy owners don't need to concern themselves with his status for the upcoming campaign.
