We've got another trade -- not quite the blockbuster we saw last Tuesday, but a trade nonetheless. The Diamondbacks sent third baseman Ryan Wheeler to the Rockies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Matt Reynolds.
Reynolds, 28, appeared in 71 games for the Rockies in 2012, putting up a 4.40 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 57 1/3 innings. He struck out 51 batters and walked 17. He appeared in 73 games in 2011. Overall, he has a 3.93 ERA in 165 career outings over three seasons. He has, however, been better on the road, putting up a 3.33 ERA away from Coors Field and 4.34 at home.
Despite being left-handed, he's been used almost equally between left-handed hitters and right-handed hitters, with lefties hitting .262/.309/.459 against him in 264 career plate appearances and right-handers hitting .259/.323/.506 in 266 plate appearances. Right-handers had an OPS of .937 against him last season, opposed to a .757 OPS by lefties in 2012.
Wheeler, 24, played 50 games for the Diamondbacks this past season, hitting .239/.294/.339 in 119 plate appearances, with a homer and 10 RBI. At Triple-A Reno, he hit .351/.388/.572 with 15 home runs and 90 RBI in 93 games (399 plate appearances). I talked to him before he was called up in July.
