Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and faces Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Monday. Beachy will see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on Wednesday.
Beachy, 25, left Saturday's start in the fourth inning after feeling pain in his elbow and had complained of elbow soreness following his previous start. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez had previously said he was optimistic that Beachy's injury wasn't serious.
"I guess my optimism was for nothing," Gonzalez said Monday (via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution).
The team placed Beachy on the DL on Monday and called up Jair Jurrjens to replace him in the rotation. He will start Friday at Boston.
Beachy led the majors with a 2.00 ERA and had a 5-5 record.
