Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts just can't catch a break. He missed the beginning of the 2012 season with lingering issues from a concussion. He finally was able to return June 12. But come July 3, he hit the disabled list with a hip issue. And now his season is over.
Roberts announced Sunday that he'll be forced to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip. He expects to have the surgery within the next seven to 10 days, which will then be followed by four to six months of rehab.
Roberts, 34, is a two-time All-Star and was once one of the best second basemen in baseball. The last three years, however, have been marred by injury. Roberts played just 59 games in 2010, 39 in 2011 and a meager 17 this season.
He's been saddled with a herniated disc, abdominal strain, a concussion and then this hip issue.
Roberts hit .182/.233/.182 in 74 plate appearances this season.
As for the impact on the Orioles, it's pretty minimal, as they've grown accustomed to not having Roberts. Recently-acquired Omar Quintanilla is swinging a hot bat and should continue to see regular at-bats there.
