Cincinnati Reds: Buyers
Why: At 44-37, the Reds are just a game out of the division lead in the NL Central. Even if they can’t overtake the Pirates, they’ll contend for a wild card.
Who do they need: The Reds have a pretty well-rounded team, and don’t need to make any major acquisitions. Still, the team could use an upgrade in the outfield, where Drew Stubbs has slumped to .214/.289/.349. Left field has also been a problem, as Ryan Ludwick and Chris Heisey have struggled.
Scott Rolen can never be counted on to stay healthy, but Todd Frazier filled in admirably earlier this year.
Who can they deal: Catcher Devin Mesoraco has struggled this season, but he’s clearly the future at the position. The team could elect to put Ryan Hanigan on the block and see if anyone bites.
The Reds would probably be interested in getting rid of Bronson Arroyo, but few teams will want to pick up his $11.5 million salary next season.
The team could try and deal Heisey or Ludwick, but neither will lead to a huge return.
Who is available: The Reds could use help in the outfield, and Carlos Quentin makes sense. Quentin will be highly coveted, and the Reds may not have the pieces to acquire him.
There aren’t many center fielders on the market, but the team could look to replace Stubbs if someone of value is available.
Verdict: The Reds are in good shape to contend this season. Since they used many of their prospects to acquire Mat Latos, the Reds don’t have many attractive trade chips. Quentin would be a nice get, but the Reds are more likely to focus on smaller upgrades.
