With the season winding down and most teams playing non-meaningful baseball, some starters are shutting it down for the year prior the their final scheduled starts. These three are the latest:
- Mark Buehrle of Miami currently has a 3.74 ERA and 3.13 K/BB in 31 starts for the Marlins. This season marks his 12th straight with at least 200 innings pitched, a feat last achieved by Greg Maddux. The former Braves ace threw 200 innings every season from 1988 to 2006, falling just short in his last two seasons (198 in 2007, 194 in 2008). Buehrle "probably" won't start Wednesday according to Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post reports.
- Carlos Villanueva of Toronto will finish with a 4.16 ERA in 38 total appearances and a 4.50 ERA (3.4 K/BB) in 16 starts. Villanueva will not make his scheduled start Tuesday, John Lott of the National Post reported Monday.
- Casey Kelly has been shut down for the season and will not pitch in the Arizona Fall League, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday. Kelly finishes his debut season with a 6.21 ERA in six starts, as he was roughed up for five homers and 39 overall hits in just 29 innings of work. According to manager Bud Black, the issue keeping him out of Tuesday's scheduled start and the Arizona Fall League is "not serious."
